Esbjerg offers a wide range of themes for a trip: beaches and water, nature in the Wadden Sea area, unusual art, and museums offering insights into the city’s and coast’s history. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay in Esbjerg, thinking about what interests you most can be a good place to start: Do you prefer water-based experiences, nature trails or exhibitions?

Water and beaches: from the lagoon to a seal safari

The bookable seal safari offered by the Wadden Sea Centre departs from the centre and goes to Mandø. You can take the centre’s tractor bus or drive your own car to the stopping point. As this is a bookable experience, it’s worth checking the current tour calendar before planning your trip around it.

At Esbjerg Beach, a lagoon offers opportunities for swimming and water activities, regardless of the season and tides. Check the water quality before swimming. In the northern part of Esbjerg Beach, Aqtiv has a floating bathing platform, showers and changing facilities. There is also a sauna, but its opening hours are limited; check the latest information about the facilities before visiting.

Another way to explore the beach is along the 660-metre-long wooden Hjerting promenade. It includes ramps and a viewing platform. The promenade is designed to provide access to the beach and a range of beach activities; individual facilities may change. So, in addition to swimming in the lagoon, a longer stretch of beach and the activities available there can be separate aspects of your trip planning.

Landscapes and art with distinctive forms

Lyshøjen is a dome-shaped hill, 30 metres high and 280 metres in diameter. It is made of 800,000 cubic metres of earth excavated during construction of the Esbjerg Motorway. Nineteen dome-shaped lamps are built into the hill; they light up and flash in time with the traffic on Vestkystvejen. Lyshøjen is considered Denmark’s largest land art installation. Its size, origins and lighting design make it an unusual example of how landscape and art can be combined.

Marbæk, a large and varied natural area, lies northwest of Esbjerg and is part of Wadden Sea National Park. Forest, heathland, beaches, lakes and the Wadden Sea form a connected landscape there. Marbæk Plantation has a marked mountain-bike singletrack route of about five kilometres. Its sections are marked with the difficulty grades blue, red and black; check local conditions before riding.

Marbæk also has a route about ten kilometres long, running from the parking area on Sanatorievej near Gyvelvænget to the path behind Myrtuegård at Myrtuevej 39. It passes through varied natural scenery. The distance and endpoints help distinguish this route from the roughly five-kilometre mountain-bike singletrack, without suggesting that the two trails form one continuous route.

Wildlife and trails in Nørreskoven

The deer park in Nørreskoven is an enclosed area where visitors can observe sika deer, red deer and fallow deer at close quarters. The animals live wild there. Those interested in an outdoor activity can also find a free 18-hole disc golf course south of the deer park.

The red-marked Energistien trail in the deer park is 3.4 kilometres long and intended for walking or running. It loops around the former deer park and the golf course. The activities available here therefore differ in more than just the type of exercise: visitors can observe wild deer, while the disc golf course and Energistien offer their own ways to get active.

Museums spanning city history and the Wadden Sea

Esbjerg Museum has three permanent exhibitions about the occupation, the resistance movement and the urban environment in the first half of the 20th century. The BESAT exhibition has a narrower focus in time: it uses interactive displays to show everyday life in Esbjerg during the occupation in 1943. The permanent exhibitions provide a broader historical context, while BESAT focuses on a particular year.

The Fisheries and Maritime Museum in Sædding is one of six gateways to Wadden Sea National Park. The museum features a reconstruction of Esbjerg Harbour as it was between 1910 and 1970, as well as working maritime workshops. It also offers the chance to see seals, marine animals and birds of the Wadden Sea at close quarters. A visit to the museum thus combines maritime history with a glimpse of Wadden Sea wildlife.
