Snoghøj brings together the coastal landscape of the Lillebælt with bridge history and activities on foot, on the bridge and by the water. Snoghøjgårdparken, the Old Lillebælt Bridge and historic crossings over the Belt each offer a different perspective. If you’re looking for a hotel in Snoghøj, you can plan your trip around nature, Bridgewalking or local history.

Nature, coast and trails

Snoghøjgårdparken is located in Lillebælt Nature Park, which covers 370 km² and is Denmark’s largest marine nature park. Within the park, the natural landscape connects the coast and beach with views of the Lillebælt. If you’d like to explore on foot, you can include the “Snoghøjgårdparken og broturen” route in your plans: it is 2.4 km long and passes through woodland and meadow areas as well as along the coast. The park offers views of the coast and water; the route also takes in woodland and meadows. The scales differ: 370 km² describes the nature park, while 2.4 km is the length of the specific route. This lets you distinguish the wider natural area from a single trail.

Bridgewalking and views

Bridgewalking on top of the Old Lillebælt Bridge offers a different perspective. Visitors can walk 60 metres above sea level and look out over the Lillebælt, Jutland and Funen. While the route passes through different types of landscape, Bridgewalking focuses on walking high above sea level and taking in the view from the bridge. A trail through woodland, meadows and along the coast and a view across the Belt are two distinct experiences.

Ferry crossing, school and bridge construction

Snoghøj’s history includes several distinct milestones. In the Middle Ages, a ferry service ran from Snoghøj across the narrowest part of the Lillebælt to Middelfart. In 1913, Højskolen Snoghøj was founded as a folk high school for fishing. In 1929, a construction site was established in Snoghøj for the Lillebælt Bridge. The Old Lillebælt Bridge was completed in 1935 and became the first fixed link between Jutland and Funen. The ferry service and the fixed crossing represent different historic ways of crossing the Belt; the school’s founding adds a separate institutional milestone to this transport and construction history.

Snorkelling and fishing

The Snoghøj dive site is suitable for snorkelling; check local conditions and safety before entering the water. The Snoghøj fishing spot has seasonal garfish, as well as opportunities to catch mackerel, cod and flatfish. Different information is relevant when planning: check local conditions before snorkelling, and bear in mind that garfish are seasonal when fishing.

Camping by the Lillebælt

There is a tent site at Snoghøjgårdpark. Overnight stays are free and limited to a maximum of two nights; the site cannot be booked. The tent site is 200 metres from the Lillebælt, making it easy to combine camping with a swim. As practical information may change, check the details before your trip.
