Bevtoft – Church History and River Landscape
Accommodation in Bevtoft
Bevtoft combines church history dating back to the Middle Ages with specific places of remembrance and landscape features. There are two perspectives to consider when choosing a destination for your stay: the history at Bevtoft Church and the Genforeningsstenen, and the river and forest features at Gelså and Bevtoft Plantation. This gives you a way to assess Bevtoft based on named themes.
Church History and the Genforeningsstenen
Bevtoft Church dates back to a Romanesque chapel that had already been expanded into a full parish church by the end of the 12th century. Its building history can therefore be understood as a development from chapel to parish church, rather than as a single construction phase.
The ten-ton Genforeningsstenen in Bevtoft was erected on September 22, 1922, on the initiative of two Bevtoft residents, Jørgen Schmidt and Chr. Brink. It was funded partly by private contributions and partly by financial support from the Bevtoft Parish Council. The stone stands opposite Bevtoft Church on Krügersvej in 6541 Bevtoft. The date, initiators and location give the monument a specific connection to local history and help you place it geographically.
Gelså and Paths Through the Landscape
The Gelså near Bevtoft was restored to a more natural state in 1989 and now winds through the meadows again, roughly as it did before it was straightened in 1952. The timeline makes the changes clear: straightening was followed decades later by restoration. As part of this restoration, the network of paths along the river and in its surroundings was expanded. If you plan a walk there, check current path conditions before your visit.
Bevtoft Plantation: Watercourse and Burial Mounds
Bevtoft Plantation also offers its own landscape attraction. The small watercourse Valsbæk runs through the plantation, which contains a total of six Bronze Age burial mounds. The names Valsbæk and Gelså refer to different landscape features: Valsbæk runs through the plantation, while the Gelså meanders through meadows. If you are interested in local archaeological history, the six burial mounds offer a specific connection to the Bronze Age; Valsbæk represents another aspect of the plantation.
A dog exercise area has also been established in the northern part of the plantation. If you plan to visit it, check the current condition of the facility beforehand.
Shelters with Different Features
The “Æ bette hyt” shelter is located in Bevtoft and offers views over the river valley as far as the Gelså. In November 2018, the Bevtoft Residents’ Association built the fire shelter “Æ hyt”; the description at the time stated that it was free for everyone to use.
You can also consider the span of time when deciding where to stay: the church history dates back to the late 12th century, the Genforeningsstenen was erected in 1922, and the river landscape underwent changes in 1952 and 1989. This lets you weigh church history, a place of remembrance and landscape change as different priorities for your stay in Bevtoft.
