Diernæs: Hiking, Beach and History
Accommodation in Diernæs
When planning a stay in Diernæs, hiking, the coast, water and history can each provide a different focus. The Camino Haderslev Næs and a shorter trail by Slivsø appeal to travellers who want to explore the area on foot. Diernæs Beach adds an opportunity to swim; SUP is also possible nearby on Slivsø. The historic Sikringsstilling Nord offers another way to explore the area.
Hiking trails of different lengths
The Camino Haderslev Næs is a 106 km-long hiking trail. It is marked with wooden posts bearing the route logo and small signs featuring the logo and arrows. The posts and signs provide recognisable trail markers, while the arrows indicate direction. Near Diernæs, a trail of about 3.5 km runs along the north shore of Slivsø, taking hikers close to the lake and its wildlife. This lakeside trail is considerably shorter than the Camino and focuses on the lake and its wildlife. When choosing a hike, visitors can therefore choose between a long route and a shorter lakeside trail.
Diernæs Beach on the bay
Diernæs Beach is on Diernæs Bay, east of the Diernæs Strand holiday-home area. It has Blue Flag status. Along the Camino Haderslev Næs, there is an opportunity to swim at the beach before continuing on to Hoptrup Church. The beach can therefore be a focus in its own right or be considered as part of this hiking route, which continues from the swimming spot along the coast towards the church. This provides a concrete way to combine hiking and the beach when planning a trip, without either interest needing to take precedence.
Water routes and orientation at Slivsø
The route “Slivsø – ad Hoptrup Å til Diernæs Bugt” runs downstream along Hoptrup Å to Diernæs Bay. Near Diernæs, SUP is possible on Slivsø, starting from the platform by the pump house. These two ways of enjoying the water differ in their setting and activity: the route follows the river to the bay, while SUP is possible on the lake. The Shelter i Diernæs is located between Slivsøen and Diernæs Beach and is another named place between lake and coast. Alongside the beach and hiking trail, visitors can therefore also take in the river, the lake and a shelter as distinct features of the landscape during their stay.
The historic Sikringsstilling Nord
Sikringsstilling Nord is a historic fortification approximately 50 km long. It runs from Hoptrup, east of Diernæs, to Rømø in the west. The Imperial German Army built it in 1916–1917. Originally, the fortification comprised about 900 bunkers and 40 batteries, as well as flood-control structures, trenches and military railways for transporting supplies to the position. Its various components show that the original installation comprised more than individual bunkers: it also included structures in the landscape and a railway for supplies. Its length, construction period and components give an impression of the scale and layout of this historic fortification system.
