Frydenborg is a small fishing settlement on the Little Belt on the Stenderup Peninsula. Sønderskov lies on the southern edge of the settlement and stretches down to the coast. The forest and coast are therefore important landscape features of the destination. At the same time, Frydenborg Huse tells the story of how the settlement developed. Nature, marked trails and local history offer different ways to get to know Frydenborg as a destination.

Coast, Forest and Nature Watching

Sønderskov includes deciduous and beech forest, raised bog, and heath and bog areas with birch and spruce. The raised bog Lyngmosen lies within the forest and is covered mainly by birch and Sitka spruce. The landscape around Frydenborg thus includes a variety of forest and bog areas.

The Frydenborgvej 18 site is located in the Lillebælt Natura 2000 area (SAC96) and in the coastal landscape of the Stenderup Peninsula. At this site, views across the Little Belt and the connection to the coast are central to the character and perception of the landscape. From Frydenborg, you can see Fyn, Fænø and Fænø Kalv.

Nearby in Sønderskov, there is a picnic and fire site on the beach. It has tables and benches, as well as a fire and barbecue area. The site offers views of the Little Belt and Fyn; Brandsø may also be visible on the horizon. The Stenderup Forests also offer opportunities to spot white-tailed eagles and marsh harriers, as well as porpoises in the Little Belt.

Marked Trails and Routes of Different Lengths

There are five marked walking routes of between 3 and 7 km near Frydenborg. The different route lengths offer a practical guide when planning a walk. The marked cycling route Vandvejen also runs nearby. It is 33.7 km long and runs across the Stenderup Peninsula, through the Stenderup Forests and along the coast of the Little Belt. Unlike the shorter walking routes, Vandvejen is a longer cycle ride that takes in several of the peninsula’s landscapes.

Frydenborg Huse and the History of the Settlement

Husvold is a rampart in Sønderskov on the southern edge of Frydenborg. Its ramparts enclose an area of about 80 by 50 metres. Thus, alongside nature, the area also has a specific historic site to explore.

Originally, Frydenborg was a house on the glebe land within Sønder Stenderup. After the fire in Sønder Stenderup in 1807, the house was moved to a plot belonging to the glebe land outside the settlement. It later developed into the small settlement of Frydenborg Huse. The progression from a single house to a settlement gives the area’s history a clear historical connection.

The residents of Frydenborg Huse were mainly day labourers and fishermen. Several houses were built as semi-detached homes, and the settlement has both thatched-roof and tiled-roof houses. Frydenborg Huse is part of a coastal community of fishermen’s houses and smallholdings. This combination of settlement layout, former occupations and coastal setting shapes the historic character of the place.
