Nature and Hiking Around Sjølund

Skamlingsbanken is the highest point in South Jutland and a protected area. During the last Ice Age, a glacier shaped the landscape; today, the area is characterised by varied nature, large open grazing areas and dry grassland. Skamlingsbanken offers 360-degree views of the landscape and the Lillebælt. The Udsigtsruten, which runs through the area around Sjølund, leads from Højskamlingen to Bjerget and also offers 360-degree views of the Lillebælt and the landscape south of Kolding. Højskamling is a 1.5 km hiking route with five information stations about the history, landscape and nature of Skamlingsbanken. While the Udsigtsruten focuses on the route and views, the themed stations are the main focus of Højskamling. As routes may change, check the current route before setting out.

The Picnic-cirkel at Skamlingsbanken invites you to take a picnic break, play and learn more about how glaciers shaped the landscape 18,000 years ago. A firm gravel path leads from the car park to the Picnic-cirkel and is easily accessible. Here, a specific learning topic is combined with a described walking route, while the hiking trails offer their own routes and information.

Activities in Sjølund

The Sjølund disc golf course has nine baskets. It is open to everyone at weekends and on weekdays outside school and SFO hours: Mondays to Thursdays after 5 p.m. and Fridays after 4 p.m. As these access conditions may change, check them before visiting. The outdoor fitness area offers bodyweight training as well as resistance training with magnetic weights. This means there are two different outdoor activities: disc golf with set visiting hours and a fitness area offering two types of training.

Visitors can use the Madpakkehus at Sjølund-Hejls School outside regular school hours. The Sjølund Multiarena can be rented by individuals and businesses. If you plan to use the Multiarena, check the current rental conditions, as these may change. Together with disc golf and outdoor fitness, these activities show that Sjølund offers both visits with set hours and facilities that can be booked.

Local History and Culture

The Sjølund Mølle animal feed factory dates back to 1868 and was rebuilt in 1963 after a fire. Vejstrup Kirke is located in Sjølund. The former railway connection is also part of the town’s history: from 1911 to 1948, Sjølund was a station on the Kolding Sydbaner line between Kolding and Hejlsminde. The mill, church and former railway station offer different ways to understand the town and its past.

Skamlingsbanken: History and Visitor Centre

Skamlingsbanken was an important gathering place in Danish history. The Skamlingsbanken Visitor Centre, in the area around Sjølund, uses a digital story to present four forces: nature, place, speech and assembly. The centre is built into the hillside and has a large window overlooking the Lillebælt. The presentation’s content may change. Here, you can experience both the landscape and a story that explores nature and assembly as themes.

At the visitor centre, Café Skau serves light meals, refreshments, coffee and cake. Restaurant Skamlingsbanken is 150 metres from the Skamlingsbanken visitor attraction and serves food and drinks. If you plan to visit the café or restaurant, check the current menu and opening hours in advance.
