Several old half-timbered houses have been preserved in Asserballeskov, and the town’s history includes different stages of schooling. Nearby are Asserballeskov Beach and the dolmen sculpture near Kettingskov. This brings together architectural history in the town, coastal scenery, and a prehistoric cultural landmark. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, you can use these themes to decide whether local history, the coast, or regional culture should be the focus of your plans.

Half-timbered houses and school history

Different dates are given for two of the old half-timbered houses. One was probably built in 1763; another is dated to May 10, 1795, based on the inscription on its door knocker. The first year is explicitly a supposition, while the second date is tied to an inscription. The two building dates therefore differ both in their chronology and in the way they were established.

There was already a school in Asserballeskov in the 1750s. The old school building Frederiksværk was built by Duke Frederik Christian in 1828. The history of schooling thus goes back further than the construction date of this building. Together with the preserved half-timbered houses, these historic milestones offer different insights into the town’s history, from its early school years to specific building dates.

Blommeshytten and accommodation options

Blommeshytten is a former canteen barrack from the Frøslev camp and was built with volunteer labor. When the owners do not need it themselves, it is rented to other scouts, schools, childcare institutions, and associations that work mainly with children and young people. You should therefore check availability separately when planning: rentals depend on whether the owners need the hut.

The Fjordterne shelter in Blomeskobbel is a mini shelter that must be reserved, accommodates a maximum of three people, and is located directly on the Alsstien trail. If you are considering this accommodation option, check the reservation requirement and maximum occupancy before making plans, as these are operational details that may change. The conditions differ from those for Blommeshytten: here, the reservation requirement and maximum number of guests are explicitly stated.

Blomeskobbel: forest and long barrows

The small Blomeskobbel forest lies by the Lillebælt and is a lush deciduous forest with a small proportion of conifers. Two large long barrows lie side by side in the northern part. One is 53 meters long and the other 34 meters; both have two burial chambers each. This gives two clear points of comparison: their different lengths and their shared feature of having two chambers each.

Coast, cycling route, and regional history

Near Asserballeskov, Asserballeskov Beach lies along an approximately 41-kilometer stretch of coast on the Lillebælt in Sønderborg Municipality. This describes the coastal stretch on which the beach is located. It places the beach within the wider coastal area without equating its length with that of the entire stretch.

Another cultural landmark nearby is the dolmen sculpture near Kettingskov. It stands directly on cycling route 8, which is also called Østersøruten. An information sign explains the prehistoric history of Als, particularly that of the nature-rich area near Kettingskov. At this site, a sculpture is thus paired with specific information about the region’s prehistory; the route provides the cycling connection.

A planned rest stop is also connected to cycling route 8. On August 2, 2023, Sønderborg Municipality approved a shelter and a composting toilet at Kildevæld 2 in Asserballeskov. One condition was that both had to be publicly accessible. The facilities were intended to serve as a small rest stop for cyclists on a small green space by the cycling route. If you plan to visit this spot today, please check its current status.
