Augustenborg combines ducal architecture, art and nature with a town beach and a self-guided walking tour. When planning your trip, you can choose from several points of interest: historic streets, exhibitions, an archaeological site or wildlife watching in protected natural areas. If you are looking for a hotel in Augustenborg, you can plan your stay around the topics you would most like to explore.

A walking tour of Augustenborg

The 1.8-kilometre Hertug Route is a walking tour you can take on your own. It runs through Storegade and Slotsallé, around Augustenborg Castle, through the castle park and past the Augustiana Art Museum. Along the route, you can follow traditional craftsmanship as historic houses are restored. Information boards at the construction sites explain the history of the houses and their restoration. The tour thus links the streetscape, the castle grounds and art venues with insights into architectural history.

Castle, church and historic buildings

Augustenborg has 13 listed buildings and 29 buildings worthy of preservation. They form an almost unbroken row, especially along Storegade. The Baroque Augustenborg Castle was built between 1770 and 1776; Augustenborg Castle Church is an integral part of the castle’s unified design. In the church, the pulpit, altar and organ are combined at the eastern end to form a so-called pulpit altar. A mini-museum in the bell tower offers insight into the history of the ducal family of Augustenborg.

Art with a variety of focuses

Augustiana – an art park and art hall at Augustenborg Castle – presents modern art, changing exhibitions, and a range of art projects and events. KunstPunkt hosts year-round changing exhibitions featuring local, national and international artists. KunstVærket is a creative venue in Augustenborg on Als in Southern Jutland, with studios used by almost 43 artists. It opens its doors to guests and art lovers on the last weekend of each month and at Easter. There you can explore visual art, ceramics and photography; a printmaking studio is also among the art forms on offer. The art venues thus provide a range of ways to engage with art: from modern art and events to changing exhibitions, studios and a variety of artistic techniques.

Park, fjord and nature

The castle park can be accessed from the castle and via Palævej. A waterfront promenade runs along the fjord from the park to the harbour and into town. Check local access information before your visit. Lillehav and the innermost part of Augustenborg Fjord are a wildlife reserve. In the winter months, you can spot large flocks of tufted ducks and pochards, as well as individual greater scaups. Augustenborg Forest is a Natura 2000 site and provides a habitat for many birds. The town therefore has both a designated protected area where specific seasonal birdlife can be observed and a forest that serves as a habitat for birds.

Badehusene and Brovold

Badehusene is the town’s old bathing establishment and now serves as a town beach. It includes a small sandy beach, a sun deck with bathing huts and a bathing jetty. The town beach is used year-round; in winter, the town’s winter swimmers also bathe there. Another historic site is Brovold, a publicly accessible archaeological site dating from the early Middle Ages. It stood by a ford and a trading place within the protective rampart. The seasonal fencing is important when planning your visit: from 1 May to 30 October, the site is fenced off because livestock graze there.
