Get to know Rendbjerg through specific route details, a seasonal ferry route and the history of the brickworks. Hiking Trails and Tours Around Rendbjerg
At Rendbjerg, the Gendarme Path turns inland and passes over Munkebakke. From the Munkebakke section, there are views of Skodsbøl Forfyr. A municipal route leaflet from 2018 gives the distance for the section of the Gendarme Path from Rendbjerg to Brunsnæs as approximately 5.5 kilometres; check the current trail signs before setting out.
Another option is the circular route between Skodsbøl, Rendbjerg and Egernsund, with a stated length of 8.3 kilometres. It is longer than the approximately 5.5-kilometre stretch of the Gendarme Path between Rendbjerg and Brunsnæs. The distances refer to different types of routes: here, a circular route through three named places; there, a section between two places. This means you can take the type of route into account as well as the distance when planning.
The “Søndagsturen 1 – Rendbjerg” can also start at Rendbjerg Hjemmet and then follow Rødegade. This route specifies a named starting point and a specific road, so it offers different directions from the Gendarme Path section between Rendbjerg and Brunsnæs.
Summer Ferry and Bicycle Transport
Every summer, the Thjalfe ferry runs from Egernsund via Rendbjerg (Marina Minde) to Brunsnæs (Broagerland), onwards to Langballigau and back. Sailing days and bookings are seasonal; check them for your intended travel dates. Bicycles can be taken on the Rødsand and Thjalfe ferries. As capacity is limited, a space for bicycles should be reserved. Check the current booking information before travelling, as capacity and booking procedures may change.
Brickworks History and Earlier Shipping
Rendbjerg Teglværk was founded in 1783 and, under the Dithmer family of owners, was one of the largest brickworks in the area. Old bricks bearing the inscription “Rendbjerg” can still be found on the shore at Rendbjerg. The founding year places the brickworks in its historical context; the surviving inscription links the place name to the shoreline.
The house that local residents call “Rendbjerg Slot” was built in 1872 by Hans Heinrich Dithmer junior; at the time, he was director and co-owner of Rendbjerg Teglværk.
In the past, there was a landing place at Rendbjerg for the many fjord boats that travelled on the Flensburg Fjord. This former landing place belongs to a different period from the seasonal Thjalfe route: the first refers to the former fjord boat traffic, while the second refers to the recurring summer route.
