Agerskov can be explored through several historical periods. The medieval building history of Agerskov Church and the story of the Sikringsstellung Nord fortification line are particularly easy to distinguish. The Sikringsstellung Nord information centre is located at Nørregade 17 in Agerskov.

Sikringsstellung Nord in the First World War

Sikringsstellung Nord is a fortification line built by the German military. It was constructed from 1916 to 1918 as protection against an English attack from the north. This establishes both the period and the purpose of the installation: it was a military defensive line intended to counter a threat explicitly coming from the north. This context helps distinguish it from a single gun emplacement.

The information centre houses objects from the fortification, as well as new and old photographs and maps relating to it. The collection is therefore not limited to one type of display: objects are presented alongside photographs and maps, which also relate to the fortification. The old and new photographs reflect different periods of photography, while the maps add another visual perspective.

The information centre is open on the first Thursday of each month from 19:00 to 21:30. If the centre is important to your visit, plan your visit around these opening hours and check the current information in advance.

Gammelskov Batteri: a gun emplacement

Gammelskov Batteri refers to the ruins of a German gun emplacement from the First World War. They are located in Gammelskov Krat, three kilometres northeast of Agerskov. This site is also associated with the military history of the First World War; however, the feature described here is a gun emplacement in the form of ruins, whereas Sikringsstellung Nord is described as a fortification line. The two subjects can thus be distinguished by their respective scale without treating them as the same place or structure.

Building history of Agerskov Church

Agerskov Church was completed around the year 1200. Around 1300, the chancel and apse were demolished and replaced by the present chancel, which is almost twice as large. The dates describe two distinct building phases: first, the completion of the church, followed later by changes to its chancel and apse. This clearly distinguishes the early completion date from the renovation about a century later.

Another date in Agerskov

The Genforeningsstenen in Agerskov was unveiled on 15 June 1930. This exact date complements the approximate dates for the church and the construction period of the fortification line. As a chronological reference, these sites take you from the church’s building history around 1200 and 1300, through the military installations of the First World War, to a later event in 1930. This allows you to distinguish the historical subjects by period: medieval building phases sit alongside the First World War connections and the dated stone.
