Buntje-Ballum is a small village with clusters of farms and houses in an open landscape along the country road near the coast. The village and open landscape shape the character of the place. When planning your trip, the landscape around the Ballum Dyke, trails and nature watching, as well as events organized by the Vadehavssmedjen association, are of particular interest.

Landscape around the Ballum Dyke

Nearby, the Ballum Lock offers views over the mouth of the Brede Å, the marshland and the Wadden Sea south of the Rømødæmningen causeway. Weather and visibility can affect the view. The area behind the Ballum Dyke lies directly on the boundary of the Wadden Sea National Park. Its characteristic landscape features include marshland, dykes and clay extraction pits. From the dyke, you can look out over expansive salt meadows, tidal creeks and the sea.

A nature and trail project behind the Ballum Dyke was presented in March 2023. It improved access to nature for local residents and tourists with a walking route and two birdwatching hides. If you plan to use these facilities, check their current condition before your visit.

Walking trails, water and birdwatching

Nearby, the “Ballum – Gul rute” walking route runs south from the beach for a stretch into the Wadden Sea National Park. Conditions and access may change seasonally; check before setting out. Ballum Enge at the lock inn is a good starting point for the canoe and kayak route on the Brede Å. Before paddling, check local water and access conditions.

In the wider region, in the northern part of the Ballum Marsh, private individuals can watch the dancing starling murmurations known as Black Sun on their own. This seasonal natural phenomenon offers a different perspective on the marsh than the view from the dyke. Viewing locations and conditions vary.

Culture and events by the Wadden Sea

Vadehavssmedjen is an association with roots in Buntje-Ballum. It is based in a house with an old forge at Bunti 18 and serves as a starting point for various events and experiences related to nature and culture by the Wadden Sea.

The annual event “Vi henter tidevandet ind” takes place around mid-May, around the birthday of the poet and writer Jens Rosendal. It is held by the sea, usually at Bunti Beach; the exact location may vary. At “Vi synger solen ned,” people sing together at Bunti Beach every Thursday in July from 20:30 to 21:45. Check that year’s schedule before your trip.

Buntje-Ballum is considered part of the Ballum area. Ballum was once a seafaring town: large parts of the male population sailed to Amsterdam every year and worked on ships sailing to nearby and distant parts of the world. This history is part of the area’s cultural background, while Vadehavssmedjen’s events explore nature and culture by the Wadden Sea.
