Vandel brings together the history of a former village and railway town with the past of Flyvestation Vandel airbase. Museums, footgolf, and trails through varied landscapes each add their own character. If you’re looking for a hotel in Vandel, consider the focus of your trip: would you like to explore the local history, or also make time for exercise and nature?

From village to railway town and airbase

With the opening of the Vandelbanen railway in 1897, Vandel developed from a village into a railway town. During the occupation, the German Wehrmacht built an airfield; after the war, it became Flyvestation Vandel. Vandel also served as a supplementary base for operations during times of crisis and war. Flyvestation Vandel was decommissioned in 2003. These chapters give the town a historical focus that is also reflected in the museum themes.

Museums and layers of history

Randbøl Sogns Arkiv og Museum in Vandel is a local history museum with household items typical of the region from after 1850. Its exhibits include “Vandel og Flyvestationen 1943-2003,” which also covers the airfield’s role during the Cold War. A 1930s schoolroom and exhibitions about Vandel’s business life from the 1940s to the 1960s offer further insight into life in the town. A toy exhibition features toys spanning a period of 100 years.

The themes range from regional everyday life, school, and toys to the history of Flyvestation Vandel. Admission to Randbøl Sogns Arkiv og Museum is free during opening hours for self-guided visits; check the current opening hours in advance. Bunkermuseet is also part of the area’s historical heritage. It houses items left behind by German troops during the occupation on the grounds of the decommissioned Flyvestation Vandel.

Trails, landscapes, and activities

The marked Bindeballestien trail is 36 kilometres long in total and intended for walkers and cyclists. It connects Vejle and Billund via the old Vandelbane railway line. There are several shelter sites along the route where you can stay overnight. The landscape is also part of the route’s character: on the Bindeballestien, tunnel valleys and meltwater valleys meet. So the route offers more than just a particular distance; it also takes you between two types of valley.

Another way to get active is the Vandel Hjertesti trail. It passes a playground with an exercise trail and VandelgĂĄrd. Vandel Fodboldgolf offers a large 18-hole course in scenic surroundings. Selected holes have tees for women and children; check the latest details before your visit. At Vandel Gokart, the operator provides racing suits, gloves, and helmets for dry and rainy weather. Check the equipment details again before your drive.

Landscapes in the surrounding area

The area around Vandel also offers a variety of natural landscapes. Randbøl Hede is one of Denmark’s largest inland heaths. At Syvårssøerne, the landscape changes with the rainfall: in years with high rainfall, the lakes fill up; at other times, they are not present. This differs from a body of water that is always visible. In the natural area of Kirstinelyst, in the area around Randbøl Hede and Frederikshåb Plantage, there is a picnic shelter and nature interpretation.

You can plan your stay around the focus you prefer: the museum exhibits explore local and airfield history, while trails and nature destinations reveal other sides of the area. When choosing a hotel in Vandel, you can first decide which of these themes will shape your travel plans.
