In Holsted, you can tailor your stay to a wide range of interests: options include routes of varying lengths, landscapes along the Holsted Å, and architectural and local history. For planning, it helps to consider the options separately: some routes have a specified distance, while others are defined by their themes or destinations.

Paths and Routes Around Holsted

The four Clover Trails in Holsted are 3 km, 5.5 km, 7.8 km and 10.5 km long, and can be used on foot or by bicycle. The red Clover Trail is a historical walk with viewpoints. If you are looking for a shorter route, comparing it with the routes along the Holsted Å provides a clear guide: there are three routes there, measuring 2.4 km, 3.7 km and 4.7 km. The shortest river route is therefore shorter than the shortest Clover Trail, while the longest Clover Trail, at 10.5 km, goes considerably farther. Municipal route details may be updated, so it is worth checking the latest route description before setting out.

The Cykelrute 15: Holsted offers a different scale. This 18 km cycling route connects Holsted, Assersbølgård and Plantagen. From Medius in Holsted, four routes with different themes also lead through the town and into the surrounding area. When choosing, you can therefore decide whether a published route distance, a historical walk with viewpoints or a themed route matters most to you. The four Medius routes should not be confused with the Clover Trails and river routes described by distance in kilometres.

The Holsted Å and Green Spaces

The Holsted Å follows a natural meandering course. The bogs, meadows and dry grasslands along the river are protected; the river and its surroundings are also part of a Natura 2000 site, an international nature conservation area. Fishing is another feature of the Holsted Å: it is a good fishing water with a good trout population. These landscape and nature features give a stay a different focus from local history or routes of varying lengths.

Skoleplantagen, also called Holsted Plantage, is a woodland area west of Holsted, between the Holsted Å and Vestergade. The area includes a local memorial site. It was established in 1902 because the residents of Holsted wanted a recreation area. Today, the description of Skoleplantagen includes a playground, tennis courts, paths and benches; the area is also suitable for picnics. This brings together its local origins and practical opportunities to spend time outdoors.

Holsted Lystanlæg is another recreation area close to town, near Holsted Stationsby. It covers about 4 ha and was established in 1945. Facilities include a forest playground, a tennis court, ball courts, a dog enclosure, a fallow deer enclosure and a shelter. The facilities can be used free of charge; individual amenities may change. If you are making specific plans, check the latest information before your visit.

Townscape and Architectural History

Holsted Kirkeby developed as a ford across the Holsted Å. The town’s distinctive buildings have high architectural value overall. The railway town of Holsted, in turn, is characterised by monumental buildings from the 1920s in the Bedre Byggeskik style. Dated buildings in Holsted include Vejen Bank from 1920, Teknisk Skole from 1923 and Holsted Posthus from 1925. These dates provide a specific timeframe for understanding the town’s architectural history.

Holsted Church is also located right beside the Holsted Å. In 1950, stained-glass windows depicting biblical scenes were installed in its three chancel windows; they were made by Kræsten Iversen (1886–1955). The old Holsted water tower, Vandtårnet i Holsted, is another architectural landmark: it was built in 1925 to plans by architect Mikkel Thomsen, stands 15 m tall and is no longer in use. The original Holsted included the old post yard, the old mill and the Tinghus from 1845, all by the Holsted Å. The history of transport also reaches back to livestock being driven along the old Drivvej.

A Sporting Connection

Moldow Speedway Arena lies south of Holsted Stationsby. It is the home track of the Holsted Tigers professional team, part of Holsted Speedway Klub. Speedway therefore joins walking and cycling routes among the local interests you can consider when deciding to stay in Holsted.
