Hovborg brings together the Holme Å river, distinctive heathland and a history as a crossing point. The town developed where a branch of the historic Drivvejen crossed the Holme Å. Hovborg offers a range of options for planning a trip: walks along the river, routes through heathland and plantations, and themes from natural and local history.

The Holme Å and the heathland

The Holme Å flows through Hovborg and its distinctive heathland. In the valley, the river is surrounded by tall conifer plantations, deciduous woodland, heathland and sandy fields. Springs are visible at several places in the valley. The landscape is therefore more than just heathland: plantations, woodland, open areas and water also shape the scenery.

Hiking around Hovborg

Hovborg is a stop on the Kyst til Kyststien hiking trail and a starting point for walks along the Holme Å. For a longer outing, try Sporene ved Hovborg: this 18-kilometre loop consists of two routes, most of which are laid out as hiking trails. It passes through distinctive meadow areas and heathland plantations, as well as along the Holme Å; the start and finish are at Hovborg Kro.

At Baldersbæk, the Kvalitetssti, certified by Dansk Vandrelaug, passes through forest, bog, heathland and meadows. It is 4.4 kilometres long and starts at a gravel car park on Baldersbækvej, opposite the grounds. There are tables, benches and information boards at the trailhead. At 18 kilometres, Sporene ved Hovborg is considerably longer than this route. A section through Hovborg Plantage between Hovborg Kro and Holmeådalen is partially suitable for wheelchair users.

Cycling and activity park

Cykelrute 13: Hovborg vest is a 17-kilometre circular route. It runs from Hovborg to Klelund Plantage and Baldersbæk Plantage, then back to Hovborg. The route is not signposted; some sections may include gravel roads. Take the lack of signposting into account when planning your route.

Holmeådalens Grønne Aktivitetspark follows a 1.5-kilometre paved and lit path. There are various activities along the route for people of different ages and with different interests.

Monuments, church and natural history

Store Jyndovn is a 117-metre-long and 8-metre-wide long barrow from the Neolithic period and one of the largest prehistoric monuments in South Jutland. From Hovborg, you can reach it on foot via the Kyst til Kyststien in the direction of Klelund.

Hovborg Kirke is a brick church with limestone columns. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Greek cross, and the apse faces east. Thanks to its particularly good acoustics, the church is often used for concerts and music events. If attending a concert is important to your visit, check the event schedule.

The nature exhibition in Hovborg displays models of the first hunters in the area and their tools, including bows and axes, as well as stuffed birds and animals characteristic of the region. It also explains how the landscape developed from glaciers to farmland and traces the area's local story from the stocking peddlers through Dalgas to present-day Hovborg. Nature exhibits and local history are presented side by side.
