Discover Vejen: Art, Culture and Water

Vejen offers a range of options for a stay: art in the town centre, history along a longer route, cultural events and wellness. The routes vary in length and focus. Vejen Art Museum and the facilities at Sportscenter Danmark also offer different highlights. This allows you to choose Vejen based on the themes that interest you most.

Two routes, two different focuses

The 3.3-kilometre Niels Hansen Jacobsen Route, also known as the Green Route, runs through Vejen town centre. The focus is mainly on the art of Niels Hansen Jacobsen. The shorter of the two routes combines a manageable area with a clear focus on art. Its theme and length differ considerably from those of the Grænselandet Route.

The black Grænselandet Route is 16 kilometres long and runs through Vejen, Askov and Skibelund Krat, and along the Kongeåen. History is the main focus; the route is also designed for cycling. Along the Kongeåen, gravel paths and a footpath follow the described route. When choosing between them, both the distance and the type of activity and theme are relevant: urban art on one hand, a longer historical cycling route on the other.

Art and museum history

Vejen Art Museum is a specialist museum of Danish Symbolism, also known as Skønvirke, from around 1900. The building was constructed as a home, workshop and museum for the sculptor Niels Hansen Jacobsen (1861–1941). Period furnishings from his home have been preserved in the memorial rooms. The museum’s artistic context and its connection to the sculptor are therefore distinct, but closely related, aspects of the subject.

The sculptures around Museumspladsen are mostly by Niels Hansen Jacobsen. The square in front of the museum is in Vejen town centre and, following extensive renovation in 2013–2014, is a green oasis for relaxation. The art museum also has a workshop where visitors can fold and decorate their own paper troll and then take it home. The art offering therefore ranges from the art movement and sculpture to a hands-on creative activity.

Cultural events and theatre

Troldesalen is the largest cultural venue in Vejen Municipality, hosting events throughout the year. Studio 73, an amateur theatre in Vejen, offers a different kind of cultural experience. Volunteers stage a range of plays and concerts there throughout the year. The two venues have different focuses: events in a large municipal cultural hall, and a volunteer-run programme of theatre and concerts. If you are interested in culture, you can take these differences into account when choosing your stay without assuming a specific event date.

Vejen Å on the northern edge of town

Vejen Å runs close to the northern edge of Vejen and through a recreational area. At its widest point, it is 3–4 metres across. Its described features include deep sections, clear water and pronounced bends. This makes it a different landscape feature from the town’s art and cultural offerings: here, the focus is on the waterway’s course and characteristics. The width given refers to its widest point, not the entire length of the waterway.

Wellness and disc golf

Sportscenter Danmark, also known as Vejen Idrætscenter, has a wellness area with indoor and outdoor pools, a whirlpool and saunas. The indoor area includes a warm-water pool at around 36°C, a saltwater pool at around 36°C, a cold plunge pool and three saunas. The wellness area is open to everyone; the swimming pool and wellness area share a combined admission ticket. Check the current opening hours and ticket conditions before travelling.

Sportscenter Danmark also has a publicly accessible nine-hole disc golf course. Scorecards and course maps are available at reception, where discs can also be rented. If you plan to rent discs, check availability in advance. Wellness and disc golf are quite different activities, but both offer practical options if you would like to combine Vejen’s art and culture with sport and relaxation.
