If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Båstlund, a look at the area’s specific landscape features can help you get your bearings. Particularly informative are Båstlund Krat, with its former woodland use and species finds; the area figures for Båstlund Hedeplantage; and the two hills at Bankeshøje. These topics offer different insights into Båstlund: woodland structure, natural occurrences and surveyed landforms. This can help you decide whether a trip focused on nature and landscapes suits your interests before choosing a hotel.

Oak coppice and former woodland use

Båstlund Krat is divided into a southern section that is actively managed and a northern section that is unmanaged. The old oak coppice is characterised by multi-stemmed oaks that originated from former coppice management. Two aspects therefore come together here: the different management of the sections and a tree structure that reflects an earlier form of land use. If you are interested in landscapes shaped by both past use and ongoing management, these features offer a specific point of reference for understanding the area.

A historical landscape survey gives the total area of Båstlund Hedeplantage as 55 ha, of which 40 ha were planted. These figures may not reflect subsequent changes in land use. They distinguish between the total area and the planted portion. The area figures thus add to the picture of Båstlund: for Hedeplantage, the focus is on its size and planting, while for the coppice it is on the management of its sections and the form of its oaks.

Species finds from different periods

Mushroom finds also add a distinctive temporal dimension to the description of the natural environment. A historical find of Cortinarius subporphyropus, a rare fungus in Denmark, comes from Båstlund Krat north of Billund. Psathyrella larga was recorded in the coppice near Billund in 1989 and 1991. Two specimens of Orchesia fasciata were recorded there in 2002. The information can be compared directly: for Psathyrella larga, the two years of discovery are the focus; for Orchesia fasciata, it is the year and the number of specimens, two.

The lichen Finger-Korallav is also part of the description of the coppice: Båstlund Krat is one of its main distribution areas. The Vejle Municipality biodiversity plan published in 2019 classifies the coppice as part of this distribution area. This is a different perspective from that of the dated mushroom finds: the lichen information describes a distribution area, while the mushroom records name individual finds from specific years.

The hills at Bankeshøje

At Bankeshøje #1 in Båstlund, there is a mound 2 m high and 16 m in diameter. The mound at Bankeshøje #2 is 1.75 m high and also 16 m in diameter. The two therefore have the same diameter; #1 is 25 cm higher than #2. Their shared diameter and differing heights allow the two named mounds to be compared directly.

Planned infrastructure

A planned motorway between Billund and Give is intended to run through Båstlund Krat, north of Billund. Its project status matters for travel planning: the route is part of future plans and should not be mistaken for an existing motorway connection.
