Vesterlund – Nature and Local History
Accommodation in Vesterlund
Vesterlund combines nature along the Odderbæk with local history shaped by a school, a Bronze Age burial mound, an inn and a memorial stone. If you are looking for a hotel in Vesterlund, these different themes can help you choose how to explore the area based on your travel interests. The natural setting is reflected in walking trails, a created wetland and characteristic wildlife; the historical references range from archaeological finds to more recent local stories.
Odderbæk walking route and trail connections
The Odderbæk walking route has an alternative starting point in Vesterlund: 25 m south of Sejrupvej 2, at the corner of Sejrupvej and Tinnetvej. There are several parking spaces and a shelter for breaks and meals. Check the latest route information before setting out; facilities may change.
A broader perspective is offered by the local trail network Sporet i Odderbæk-området. It connects the three towns of Thyregod, Vesterlund and Sejrup. For planning purposes, the two details provide different kinds of guidance: the alternative starting point identifies a specific location, while the trail network describes a connection between the towns.
Wetland, birdlife and canoes
The 140 ha wetland near Odderbæk was created in 2012. Odderbæk was restored to a meandering course along a 3 km stretch. The measurements refer to different aspects of the area: 140 ha is the wetland’s area, and 3 km is the length of the stretch where the stream was restored to a meandering course. Characteristic birds in the area include lapwings, green woodpeckers, kestrels and kingfishers. The otter has also returned after being absent from the area for 50 years.
The grounds of Kulsø Spejdercenter near Vesterlund cover about 27 ha of varied natural landscapes, including woodland, bog and lakes. Guests staying at the centre can rent 10 to 11 canoes and paddle on Nedersø and Kulsø. As availability may change, it is a good idea to ask about canoe rentals before your stay.
In the nearby source area of Rørbæk Sø, there are about 50 km of marked walking trails and 12 different walks. To the southwest, trails lie in the Odderbæk area. This makes it possible to distinguish the local trail connections along Odderbæk from the figures for trail length and number of walks in the Rørbæk Sø source area.
School, burial mound and local history
Vesterlund Efterskole was founded in 1921 by residents of Vesterlund and has operated as an efterskole since its founding. In 1979, the school acquired the former municipal school; its buildings are now integrated into the efterskole. The two dates mark different stages in the school’s history: its founding by local residents and the later acquisition of an existing school building.
A Bronze Age burial mound near Vesterlund was investigated in 1908. Another historical story is told by Vesterlund Kro: the inn served as an inn from the 1870s and was later converted into a café and campsite. The RAF memorial stone in Vesterlund has been the site of several commemorative events over several decades. Archaeological history, former uses and memorial sites thus offer different perspectives on Vesterlund.
