Bildsø can be explored through three distinct features: Bildsø Beach, the trails in Bildsø Skov and Stone Age monuments. When planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus on the beach and forest trails or on longer hikes and cultural history. This lets you choose a hotel based on the interests of your trip, without assuming any particular features of the accommodation.

Bildsø Beach and the trail through the forest

Bildsø Beach is one of Slagelse Municipality’s Blue Flag beaches and is a protected area in the municipality. To get there, follow Drøsselbjergvej to a car park at the northeastern corner of Bildsø Skov. From there, a path leads through the forest to the beach. This lets you combine a visit to the beach with a stretch of forest trail, rather than viewing the two destinations separately.

Bildsø Skov is a public forest that extends to Musholm Bay and consists of a mixture of deciduous and coniferous trees. Trails lead through the forest to the beach and to viewpoints overlooking the bay. There are opportunities for hiking and cycling along the coast. Those interested in exercising in the forest will also find a public exercise and fitness area there, with almost 20 training stations made of wood and stone.

Coastal Trails and Hikes

The Musholmleden is a 58-kilometre coastal hiking trail from Reersø to Korsør on the Great Belt. One particularly notable section is near Bildsø Skov. Here, the trail runs alongside lush deciduous forest rich in birdlife. The Musholmleden is signposted, mostly flat and follows gravel roads, field paths and short paved sections. These details give you a clear idea of the trail’s length, route and surface.

The Sjællandsleden hiking trail also passes through the Bildsø Skov area. This gives you a choice of different route options: the Musholmleden is described as a 58-kilometre route between Reersø and Korsør, while the Sjællandsleden passes through the forest. The paths to the beach and viewpoints also offer shorter ways to connect with the landscape. Bildsø Skov was established in 1855 in the challenging conditions along the coast; its creation is also part of the history of this stretch of coast.

Stone Age Monuments in Bildsø

Among the protected Stone Age monuments is Langhøj, mv., Bildsø (#1), a long barrow dating from 3950 to 2801 BC. Horsedysse is also a protected Stone Age long dolmen in Bildsø. It measures 30 × 8 metres, is one metre high and has three chambers and around 50 kerbstones. Its dimensions, chambers and kerbstones give a clear impression of the form of this long burial structure.

Rundhøj, mv., Bildsø (#3), is a round dolmen with a diameter of eight metres and 23 kerbstones. It is classified as a Stone Age round mound with a dolmen or passage grave dating from 3950 to 2801 BC. In contrast to Horsedysse, the round shape and diameter are the focus here, while Horsedysse is described by its length and three chambers. Together with Langhøj, this offers a glimpse of different types of Stone Age graves without reducing the monuments to a single style of construction.
