Gershøj Harbour lies on the western shore of Roskilde Fjord, in the small fjord town of Gershøj. The fjord is designated as an international nature conservation area within the Natura 2000 network. The beach and harbour, a traditional hiking route and the village church’s architectural history give the town a range of attractions. When choosing a place to stay in Gershøj, you can consider whether you are mainly looking for time by the water, a trip through the countryside or historic architecture.

Beach and shoreline on Roskilde Fjord

There is a small, child-friendly sandy beach at Gershøj Harbour. Toilets and swimming facilities are right next to the beach. There is also a car park and a bus stop at Gershøj Harbour and Beach. This makes it easy to plan your time on the shore: the type of beach and nearby facilities are known, as are the arrival points for the harbour and beach area.

Gershøj Reef lies south of the town. It is considered a good spot for shore fishing for sea trout. This is different from swimming at the sandy beach: if you specifically want to fish for sea trout from the shore, the reef is a named point of reference when choosing where to go.

Hiking and canoes

The Sæby-Gershøj Camino is a hike of about 9 km, mostly along field and forest tracks. It is not suitable for pushchairs. Its length, terrain and this limitation can help you decide whether the hike fits into your day’s plans. The Camino is also a traditional nature hike that includes an opening devotional service at Sæby Church.

Canoeing is another option on the fjord. In Skjoldungernes Land National Park, a total of six canoes are available to borrow free of charge during the summer season, including at Gershøj Beach and Møllekrogen. Availability is seasonal and may vary from year to year, so check before your trip whether the canoes will be available in your chosen year. A canoe belonging to the national park can be borrowed at Møllekrogen and left in Gershøj. You can take this drop-off option into account when planning your canoe trip.

Gershøj Church and its architectural history

Gershøj Church is a Romanesque village church that was later rebuilt several times, especially in the late Middle Ages. Its chancel and nave are Romanesque. In the Gothic period, a porch was added on the south side of the nave, along with a western extension to the nave and a tower. The church building therefore combines Romanesque features with later additions.

Another detail can be found in the floor around the baptismal font: it contains medieval glazed tiles with recessed ornamentation. The glazes are red, reddish-brown and green. The church’s architectural history thus spans changes to the building as well as a carefully crafted detail in the interior.
