City history in the center
In Næstved, traces of different eras come together. The Næstved Museum is housed in Helligåndshuset in the city center and presents the historical development of the medieval town from the Ice Age to the present day. This broad sweep of time provides a framework for the city’s preserved structure: in the center, you will find buildings, street layouts and courtyard settings whose histories date back to the Middle Ages in many places. Those interested in city history can encounter it both in the museum’s themes and in the town’s surviving forms.
Individual buildings also offer insight into Næstved’s architectural heritage. The former Helligåndshus is the only surviving former House of the Holy Spirit in Denmark. Stenboderne is an exceptional surviving example of a medieval type of dwelling that has been preserved in only a few places in Denmark. Together, these buildings show different aspects of medieval history: a former House of the Holy Spirit and a rarely preserved form of dwelling.
Churches and their furnishings
Sct. Mortens Kirke is located in the center of Næstved and dates from around the beginning of the 13th century. Notable works of art inside include the altarpiece and pulpit by Abel Schrøder, dating from 1667. The span between the medieval church building and its 17th-century furnishings makes the church a distinct focus for city and art history. It is open Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 to 16:00 and Saturday from 10:00 to 14:00; it may be closed during church services. Check the opening hours before your visit.
Medieval frescoes and church furnishings have been preserved in Sct. Peders Kirke. These include choir stalls from Skovkloster; a fresco depicts Valdemar Atterdag and Queen Helvig. Visitors can enter the church Tuesday to Friday for quiet reflection or to view the interior. Guided tours can be arranged by appointment in Danish and English. When planning, you can choose between visiting independently and arranging a guided tour.
Art in public spaces and at the cultural center
In Næstved, you can encounter art not only in churches and exhibitions: works by international graffiti artists can be found throughout the city. Næstved Kunstby builds on a graffiti tradition that is more than 30 years old. Næstved also hosts STREET CUT, a recurring annual event. If you want to plan your trip around the event, check the dates for your stay.
Rønnebæksholm is Næstved’s art gallery and hosts art exhibitions. Its grounds include Herregårdshaven and a musical nature base. The Grønnegades Kaserne Kulturcenter offers a different architectural setting: it is located in a listed former military complex in Næstved. The cultural scene therefore ranges from graffiti in public spaces to exhibitions and a cultural center in a historic building complex.
Route, park and views
Den Grønne Ring is a signposted walking and cycling route of about 32 kilometers around Næstved. It passes through forests, meadows, wetlands and open landscapes. Its approximate length and the two intended ways of getting around give you a concrete basis for working the route into your travel plans. Large sections of Den Grønne Ring are accessible to wheelchair users.
For a different perspective on the place, Munkebakken offers a distinct landmark: it has a park with an observation tower and a memorial stone for Peder Bodilsen. The route and the park represent different sides of a stay in Næstved—a longer trail through varied landscapes on the one hand, and a named park with an observation tower on the other. You can take into account which of these interests you more when planning your stay.
