Nature and History Around Høve Beach
Beech and oak trees grow in Høve Skov. The oldest specimens date from the mid-19th century: the oldest beech trees date from 1850, and there are oaks of the same age. West of Høve Skov lies Lærkereden, a protected 6.5-hectare coastal nature area owned by the Danish Nature Agency.
The forest’s history also reaches far back. There is a single round barrow there from the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age. The pavilion in Høve Skov was built in 1905 by a local farm owner as a dance hall and inn for the people of the surrounding area. These two details point to very different periods and aspects of local history.
Near Høve Beach, by Høve, lies Esterhøj, the most prominent of three burial mounds; it is 89 metres above sea level. Another historical reference is Troldestenen: the glacial erratic weighed more than 20 tonnes and once lay on the beach in Høve Skov. This chronological distinction is important, as Troldestenen is described as a former beach find.
