Viby Sj: Hiking, Churches and Culture

Viby Sj combines opportunities for outdoor activities with church architecture, cultural offerings and regional train connections. Depending on your interests, you can focus on hiking trails, historic architectural styles or offerings such as live music and theatre when planning your stay.

Hiking and outdoor activities

Ramsødalen is located near Viby Sjælland. The approximately six-kilometre marked hiking route passes through a protected area and an EU bird protection area; there are two birdwatching towers along the route. North of Viby, the Sti langs Viby Å trail follows the meandering course of the Viby Å. Both trail descriptions offer practical guidance for planning time outdoors.

The Fitnessrute runs around the town and is equipped with exercise equipment and benches. It is signposted; exercise equipment is available at Viby Idrætscenter, at Kildemosen and in Åparken, west of Vibyvejen. This means that both a circuit around Viby and specific named stops provide guidance for this activity.

Churches and architectural history

Syv Kirke is a late Gothic hall church with a tower at the west end and a porch on the south side. The church was built around an earlier small Romanesque church made of chalk blocks, some remains of which have survived. Inside are three cross vaults and six painted consecration crosses, which were used when the church was consecrated in the Middle Ages. The architectural style, older remains and interior details each reveal different aspects of the church’s history.

Dåstrup Kirke in Viby Sjælland also reflects the Gothic style of the 13th and 14th centuries. Characteristic stepped gables can be seen on the tower and porch. A pulpit from the workshop of Brix Michgell in Roskilde adds a furnishing from a later period to the description: it was made around 1620. The church thus features both architectural elements of the Gothic period and a dated work of pulpit craftsmanship.

Culture and leisure activities

KulturCosmos in Viby Sjælland was established through the commitment of volunteers and is run by them. Its offerings include live music, theatre and visual art. The cultural venue is located on a former industrial site and comprises the building at Søndergade 13 and the larger, bare industrial hall, CosmosHallen. The building and the hall are two distinct parts of the venue.

The Ramsøegnens Lokalhistoriske Arkiv is located in Viby, on the first floor of Cosmos. Viby Bibliotek, Cosmos, has a children’s area with a reading nook for playing, reading and quiet activities. These location details add two more facilities in Viby to the cultural and leisure options.

For disc golf, Viby Disc Golf has a course in Viby Åpark with 13 baskets and 26 tee-off points. The club regularly holds events and activities at the course. If you are travelling to Viby for a particular event, check its date in advance.

Viby Sjællands Tennis- og Padelklub has three clay courts, a padel court and a clubhouse in a green setting at the end of Lindevej. Play&Pay is available on the padel court; bookings can be made through the club’s booking system. Getting there by train
