Rude – Manor Landscape and History
Accommodation in Rude
Rude is shaped by a manor landscape with intensively cultivated fields. To the east of the village lies a wooded area. Together, these landscapes show different sides of the surrounding area: open agricultural land on one side and woodland to the east on the other. The history of the village and Holsteinborg, which is associated with Rude, also offer ideas for planning a stay.
Landscape and routes east of Rude
The wooded area east of Rude can be reached by car via Næstved Landevej. A field path leads there on foot. This gives you the choice of driving or taking the field path on foot. From Rude, the route leads through the forest to the double coast and the natural area around Glænø. Those interested in the landscape can also take in these destinations alongside the forest.
Holsteinborg and the coastal landscape
Holsteinborg is a well-preserved, representative example of a Danish manor estate. The complex includes a main building, farm buildings and moats. The ensemble offers an impression of how different buildings and moats together shape a manor estate. Holsteinborg lies on Holsteinborg Nor; islands and coastal areas shelter the area from SmĂĄlandshavet.
In the eastern part of Holsteinborg Park, there are views across Holsteinborg Nor and towards Ormø and Glænø. The wider area around Holsteinborg is an important resting place for migratory birds and is important for many breeding waders and ducks.
Church, tours and cultural history
Holsteinborg Church dates from 1728. It is one of the last two private churches in Denmark used as ordinary parish churches. Tours can be booked through the estate office. They include the church, H. C. Andersen’s room, the Reventlow Room and the park. If you would like to visit these places together, you can use the tour offering as a guide when planning.
H. C. Andersen visited Holsteinborg 35 times in total, from his first visit in 1856 until his death in 1875. A Christmas tradition is also associated with the place: the first Danish Christmas tree was lit on Christmas Eve 1808 at Holsteinborg near Bisserup. Along with the writer’s room on the tour, these places provide a tangible link to Holsteinborg’s cultural history.
Traces of local history
Rude was established around 1200 as a clearing in the area’s extensive woodland at the time. The Bronze Age burial mound Dansehøj is associated with a local tradition: Rude’s farmers gathered there when the village elder sounded the horn. The story links a prehistoric site with a later tradition of village life.
The village’s former administrative function is also part of its history. Rude was the administrative headquarters of the county district and had a Birkedommergård (bailiff’s residence), a Tinghus (courthouse) and a police station. When choosing a hotel in Rude, these different points of interest can provide a starting point: Holsteinborg combines manor architecture and cultural history, while the forest and coastal landscape offer other focal points for your stay.
