Skælskør offers a range of options for a trip, depending on your interests: culture centred on the town museum and the ceramics festival at the harbour sits alongside signposted trails and natural features in the surrounding area. The Lodshusstien runs from the harbour town to the Outer Fjord; Kobæk Skov and Kobæk Strand offer further ways to explore the landscape. You can first decide whether architecture, the festival date or the route should be the deciding factor in planning your trip.

Culture and ceramics

The Skælskør Town Museum is housed in a red Renaissance half-timbered building. Its colour, half-timbering and Renaissance style represent three tangible aspects of the building: its colouring, construction and architectural classification. For travellers interested in architecture, the building is a specific point of interest.

The ceramics festival takes place every year on the Wednesday of calendar week 28 at the harbour in Skælskør. More than 80 professional ceramicists exhibit and sell their work there; workshops for adults and children are also offered. The festival therefore includes both the presentation and sale of ceramic works and a programme of workshops. If the festival is the reason for your trip, check that year’s programme dates, as they vary from year to year.

Hiking routes and route planning

The Lodshusstien is a signposted, 7 km hiking route from the harbour town of Skælskør through orchards to the nature-rich Outer Fjord. For your planning, it combines a clearly defined length with a named landscape route: from the town, through orchards, to the Outer Fjord. Fodsporet has a branch from Dalmose to Skælskør. The two routes therefore offer different points of reference: the Lodshusstien for its length and landscape, and Fodsporet for the connection between the two towns.

Along the Lodshusstien, the Vasebro nature campsite has public toilets, three shelters and a fire shelter. If these facilities are important for your plans, check their availability before setting off.

Nature in the surrounding area

Near Skælskør, the approximately 95-hectare Kobæk Skov borders the town. Trails at Kobæk Strand run through Kobæk Skov and continue along the Outer Fjord; the beach also has a 90-metre-long bathing pier. This adds further natural features to consider alongside the Lodshusstien: forest, trails along the Outer Fjord and the bathing pier are all connected at Kobæk Strand. When choosing a route, you can compare the Lodshusstien’s landscape of orchards and the Outer Fjord with the forest and beach landscape at Kobæk.

These options offer different ways to choose when to travel and what to do: the festival provides a recurring date on the calendar, while the routes can be distinguished by their respective landscapes or connections between places. You can therefore start planning your trip by choosing a date or the kind of route you want.
