In Solrød, coastal landscapes, nature trails and cultural and historical sites come together in one travel experience. Wide sandy beaches and the dunes at Solrød Strandpark offer a different focus from the forests and lakes around Karlstrup or the old village settings. When planning your trip, you can decide whether beach days, outdoor activities or history should take priority.

Coast, Forest and Birdlife

The six-kilometre coastline at Solrød Strandpark consists mostly of wide sandy beaches with dunes and child-friendly swimming conditions. Swimming, sailing and nature experiences are among the activities available along the coast. Solrød Strand beach can be reached, among other routes, via Østre Strandvej.

Trylleskoven combines forest and beach: this protected woodland, with its gnarled pines, was planted in the late 19th century. It also features a fire pit and a nature playground. The beach at Trylleskoven is especially child-friendly thanks to its wide sandy shore and shallow water.

A different landscape awaits you at Staunings Ø. The sandbar has a dune landscape with marram grass; behind it are lagoon lakes with extensive reed beds and abundant birdlife all year round. Several footbridges cross the lagoon lakes to Staunings Ø. If you plan to visit, note the seasonal access restriction: access to the southern tip is prohibited during the breeding season, from 1 April to 31 August.

Nature Trails and Limestone History

In Karlstrup Skov og Kalkgrav, trails run alongside the lake. There you can picnic, fish and look for fossils. The limestone quarry contains 65-million-year-old bryozoan limestone with several layers of flint. The Hedebostien recreational trail passes Karlstrup Kalkgrav and continues to Trylleskoven at Solrød Strand. The nature trail is intended for walkers, joggers, cyclists and horse riders.

Solrød Caminoen also offers various ways to experience nature and the coastal landscape. It connects four Kløverstier routes with other trails through nature, coastal landscapes and local communities. It includes Strandturen, a five-kilometre route. This makes it possible to distinguish a shorter, clearly specified tour from the other routes in the trail network.

Village Settings and Cultural History

Solrød Landsby is one of the oldest villages in Solrød Municipality. Eight Bronze Age burial mounds lie north of the village, and archaeological finds date back several thousand years. The village’s cultural and historical character has been preserved mainly around Solrød Byvej. Old, elongated farmhouses stand alongside newer homes from the cooperative housing era. The foundations of today’s Solrød Kirke date back to a stone church from the 12th century.

Another historic church is the small, well-preserved medieval Karlstrup Kirke, on a hill beside Karlstrup Møllebæk. It was built as part of a manor that developed into a castle complex and disappeared more than 600 years ago. The church is open to visitors daily; if you are planning a visit at a specific time, check access in advance.

Described as “Denmark’s smallest museum,” the museum is housed in a 1944 transformer tower. Old photographs and films tell the story of Solrød Strand. Solrød also offers cultural activities beyond its older local history: Solrød Bibliotek og Kulturhus is open to everyone and supports, among other things, reading groups, knitting cafés, board game groups, talks, music events, debates and workshops. Founded in 2014, Solrød Opera brings Danish opera and classical music to Solrød. Solrød Bio has shown films for children, young people and adults since 1977.

Activities and Travel Planning

Solrød Svømmehal offers family-friendly swimming, relaxation and water play. Its facilities include a 25-metre pool, a baby and warm-water pool, a training pool, a sauna and an infrared sauna. As well as swimming and training, water activities such as diving and kayaking are available there.

Recurring events include the annual Solrød Byfest, with activities, food, music and a communal meal. Dates and programmes may change; check the relevant announcement if you are planning your stay around the event. Solrød Strand station is served directly by S-train lines A and E. Check timetable details before travelling at a specific time.

When looking for a hotel in Solrød, start by asking whether the coast and nature trails or village history and culture will be the focus of your trip. Base your choice on the places and activities you plan to visit. This will help you find a suitable base for your days in Solrød, without reducing the beach, nature and local history to a single type of trip.
