A thin layer of fish clay makes the history of Stevns Klint unusually vivid: it documents the asteroid impact associated with the extinction of the dinosaurs and half of all animal species. Stevns Klint is a UNESCO World Heritage site and stretches about 17 kilometres from Bøgeskov Havn in the north to Rødvig Havn in the south. In Stevns Municipality, you can experience geological history, hiking trails and a wide range of cultural topics.

Cliffs, chalk and walks

The cliff is up to 40 metres high and consists of layers of grey-white limestone, white chalk and flint. The 22-kilometre Stevns Klint Trampesti runs along the cliff. The trail offers panoramic views and traces of the extinction of the dinosaurs. When planning your route, it is also important to note that cycling is not permitted along the cliff, and the Trampesti may only be used on foot.

At Boesdal Kalkbrud, you can walk through a former opening in the cliff down to the sea. Flint was once tipped onto the beach through this opening. At Holtug Kridtbrud, typical fossils include thunderstones, various sea urchins and corals; shark teeth, as well as teeth or parts of a mosasaur, can also be found there. The thin layer of fish clay above the chalk marks the K/T boundary.

River valley and birdwatching

Over its final 15 kilometres, the Tryggevælde Å flows through Stevns in a broad river valley towards Køge Bugt. Tryggevælde Ådal is designated a Natura 2000 site and is under special protection. Two observation towers with benches and information boards help you find your way around the valley. From the southern tower, Fuglebroen leads to a birdwatching spot.

Museums and local history

The Stevns Folklore Museum presents local legends, myths and folk beliefs from Stevns and the surrounding area through exhibitions, stories and activities for the whole family. The museum can be reached by car, public transport and bicycle. The Stevns Klint Experience serves as a visitor and interpretation centre for the UNESCO World Heritage site of Stevns Klint.

At Stevns Fyrcenter, there is a permanent, free exhibition about the World Heritage site and fossils found at Stevns. A different collection awaits you at Rødvig Skibsmotormuseum: it displays 150 ship and boat engines dating back to 1903, as well as model ships and maritime equipment. Visitors can see the engines being started and board the cutter Vivi.

At the FORT Museum, you can explore the 1.7-kilometre tunnel network of Stevnsfort and its underground operations room. The underground section of Stevnsfort can only be visited on a guided tour. During the museum’s opening hours, the museum ticket also includes access to the missile, gun, fighter aircraft and radar grounds.

At Gjorslev Slot, guided tours tell the story of 600 years of history and the transformation from a medieval fortress to a castle. The park is laid out in the English garden style and is freely accessible during the day, offering a choice between a guided tour and a park visit to suit different interests.

Seasonal visiting times

Millions of birds pass Stevns Fyr every year in spring and autumn. Guided World Heritage tours depart from Højerup in summer. These nature and cultural experiences offer different seasonal highlights. If you plan to join one of the tours, check the dates before your trip.
