Nature and history can be explored through specific themes: hiking trails at Møns Klint, archaeological traces at Timmesøbjerg, Liselund’s romantic gardens and the landscape of Klinteskoven. Which of these themes interests you most can help you plan a trip that suits your preferences.

Hiking trails by length and character

There are seven marked hiking trails at Møns Klint, ranging from 2.2 to 9 kilometres in length. This range offers different route lengths to consider when planning. Distinct from these is the 14-kilometre Klintekongens Rige hiking route: it passes through Klinteskoven, Liselund’s romantic garden and Møns Klint. Check the terrain conditions and the state of the route before setting out.

Another option in Klinteskoven is an easy 5.4-kilometre hiking route. It follows forest paths and includes a detour to Aborrebjerg; it is suited to beginners and those with some experience. By comparison, the 14-kilometre Klintekongens Rige offers a considerably longer route and connects three named areas. The distances describe different routes and provide a practical basis for weighing up the scope of your hiking plans.

Chalk cliffs, views and beach

The white cliffs of Møns Klint stretch along seven kilometres of coastline and rise up to 128 metres above the turquoise-green sea. Dronningestolen is a viewpoint at the highest cliff overlook in Klinteskoven. From there, the cliff drops almost vertically 128 metres to the beach. Five stairways along the route between Liselund in the north and Møns Fyr in the south lead down from the cliff-top path to the beach.

Møns Klint beach offers good opportunities for fossil hunting. Possible finds include remains of sea urchins and belemnites. The coast thus combines a striking landscape with a specific nature theme: those interested in fossils can consider both the beach and the hiking trails when planning their trip.

Forest, valley and plant life

Klinteskoven is a public forest. Most of it is designated as natural forest and managed in a nature-friendly way to benefit birds, fungi and insects. Its chalk-rich soil supports several species of wild orchids. The geological formation of the coast is also remarkable: Møns Klint is a chalk landscape shaped by glaciotectonic processes during the Weichselian glaciation.

Jydelejet has a different landscape: a gentle, rounded valley and cultivated heathland. Cattle grazing and the removal of unwanted trees and shrubs help maintain it. The chalk bedrock close to the surface provides favourable growing conditions for several orchid species, including the bee orchid, white helleborine and red helleborine. The wild orchids of Klinteskoven and the named species of Jydelejet can therefore be considered as two distinct nature themes.

Garden design and prehistory

Liselund Slotspark is considered Denmark’s best-preserved romantic garden. The story of its founder, the nobleman Antoine de la Calmette, and his beloved wife Lisa is also told there. Garden design and personal history offer a different focus here from the coastal landscape and hiking trails.

Timmesøbjerg is a hilltop refuge near Møns Klint. Traces from the Bronze Age and Iron Age have been found there. Timmesøbjerg is also included on the list of Denmark’s 100 most beautiful prehistoric monuments. The GeoCenter Møns Klint is built into the cliff and designed as an exciting journey 70 million years back in time.

Practical information for your visit

The GeoCenter Møns Klint is accessible to wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility. Facilities there include an accessible toilet, accessible parking spaces and a baby-changing station; wheelchairs and pushchairs are available to borrow free of charge.

Borre Church also offers cycle tourists a place to rest, drinking water to refill their bottles and a bicycle pump during opening hours. If you plan to use this service, check the church’s opening hours in advance. This way, you can plan your trip around your specific interests in hiking, nature and culture without treating the different trails and places as if they were the same.
