Discover Præstø
Accommodation in Præstø
Præstø brings together the Præstø Fjord, historic sites, architecture, and themes of events and crafts. When choosing where to stay, you can consider what you would like to experience locally: walks, the town’s history, collections, ceramics, or a festival. The differences outlined below can help you factor your interests and available time into your plans.
Fjord, paths, and town history
Along the Præstø Fjord are so-called fjord spots, where you can experience nature, culture, and the landscape up close. At the Præstø Strand fjord spot, there is an accessible toilet and a gravel-surfaced path suitable for wheelchairs. These two facilities are located at this fjord spot.
Den Blå Rute is a 2.5 km walking route around the former island in the fjord where Præstø was originally founded. The walk combines exercise in the fjord landscape with a direct connection to the town’s early history. If you would rather walk through historic Præstø, you can follow the Antonitterruten: the town walk takes about an hour. This gives you two different ways to plan: the route length is specified for Den Blå Rute, while the approximate duration is given for the town walk. You can choose based on whether you prefer a route with a stated distance or a town walk with an estimated duration.
Architecture and collections
Præstø Torv is an exceptionally well-preserved cultural environment. The construction history of Præstø Kirke can also be placed in a historical timeframe: the nave and west tower date from the late 15th century, and the row of chapels from the early 16th century. The building elements thus span the period from the late 15th to the early 16th century.
The permanent exhibition at Thorvaldsen Samlingen på Nysø includes 52 plaster works by Thorvaldsen, 25 of his drawings, and a series of unique clay models from his working process. The clay models offer a distinctive complement to the plaster works and drawings: they originate from his work on the pieces.
At Nysø Have, visitors can take a walk and enjoy views across the Præstø Fjord. Those who would like to spend time outdoors while looking out over the water will find a different option here from a route or a town walk.
Events, crafts, and activities by the fjord
Fransk Forår is a recurring event held in the cobbled squares and streets of Præstø. Gyldne Dage in Præstø is a festival about 19th-century culture, history, and crafts. The two events have different emphases: Fransk Forår is defined by its locations around the town, while Gyldne Dage is defined by its theme. Dates and programmes vary from year to year. If you are travelling for an event, plan your visit according to the information for that year.
In the workshop at Pottemageriet Rødeled, visitors can watch a pot or a jug being made. The workshop visit therefore focuses on the making process itself. Fishing is also possible in the Præstø Fjord. Together with the fjord spots and walking paths, this offers a range of activities by and around the fjord.
