Chraštice offers several clearly distinguishable points of interest for travelers interested in cultural history. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a prominent landmark in the village and surrounding area. Other sites include a war memorial, the statue of St. John of Nepomuk, and the Chraštická plačka in the cemetery. They represent different themes: sacred architecture, a figure of a saint, funerary design, and public commemoration. Anyone considering a stay in Chraštice can use their form, dating, and precise locations as points of reference.

Church and Commemoration

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a prominent landmark in Chraštice and the surrounding area. Its north chapel of the Holy Sepulchre is now used as a storage depot. A memorial to those who fell in the First and Second World Wars stands in front of the church. The war memorial was erected soon after the First World War in commemoration of the conflict and bears the inscription “Vděčná osada Chraštice svým hrdinům 1914–1919” (“The grateful village of Chraštice to its heroes 1914–1919”). The years 1914–1919 appear in the inscription; the monument itself was created soon after the First World War. This makes it possible to consider both the memorial’s purpose of commemorating those who fell in both world wars and its early history together.

The Statue of St. John of Nepomuk in the Village Square

The sandstone statue of St. John of Nepomuk stands in the southern part of the village square, diagonally opposite the rectory at No. 1 and near the cemetery. It dates from the first half of the 19th century and stands on a tall column pedestal. Its subject is precisely defined: the saint holds a cross without a corpus, resting on a palm branch. The statue has been protected as a monument since May 3, 1958. Both its location in the village square and its depiction and date are important distinguishing features for orientation.

The Chraštická plačka in the Cemetery

The Chraštická plačka is an Empire-style tomb erected in 1789 in the cemetery. Its design includes a balustrade and a sculptural group. The tomb is also listed in the Register of Artistic Monuments of Bohemia. It differs in form and function from the statue of St. John of Nepomuk: this is a tomb with architectural elements, while the statue is a figure of a saint on a column pedestal. The two historic sites can therefore also be considered without assigning them a shared date or function.

Form, Period, and Location

The dates given for the monuments refer to different aspects. The year 1789 marks the construction of the Chraštická plačka; the statue of St. John of Nepomuk dates from the first half of the 19th century. The years 1914–1919 appear in the war memorial’s inscription, while the memorial was erected soon after the First World War. The protection and listing statuses mentioned also concern different objects: the Chraštická plačka is listed in the Register of Artistic Monuments of Bohemia, while the statue has been protected as a monument since 1958. Sorting the sites into tomb, figure of a saint, and commemoration makes these differences easier to distinguish.

Roads and Cycling Route

Chraštice is connected by the I/4 Class I road and Class III roads. Cycling route No. 302 Praha–Vídeň (Prague–Vienna) is also designated for Chraštice. The road information and the designated cycling route are two distinct points of reference for planning. Together with the local cultural monuments, they provide an objective framework for considering Chraštice as a possible travel destination and looking for a hotel for your stay.
