Discover Hořany
Accommodation in Hořany
Hořany lies on a gently sloping, elongated hill above the Elbe Lowlands. To this day, the village has retained its agricultural character and brings together a very early settlement history with later architectural and cultural evidence. For travelers, its distinct local identity is shaped by the landscape, settlement pattern, and individual historical landmarks.
Landscape and local character
The surrounding area is used predominantly for agriculture; there are no forests in Hořany. Very high-quality soils cover most of the municipality. Together with its hilltop location, these features shape the rural surroundings. If you are choosing a destination for its landscape and local character, Hořany is a place with a distinctly agricultural character and no forests in the surrounding area.
Archaeology and settlement pattern
Archaeological finds show that Hořany was already inhabited in 5500 BC. Neolithic finds include small stone tools and pottery vessels from the Linear Pottery culture. These types of finds give the early settlement phase a tangible form. Much later in time is the systematically planned settlement: Hořany is a well-preserved example of a Central Bohemian settlement of this kind from the mid-19th century. Thus, very early habitation and a more recent planned settlement form stand side by side as distinct layers of time. A protected cultural heritage area has also been designated in Hořany.
Chapel, painting, and architectural history
The Chapel of the Virgin Mary stands in the middle of the village square in the southern part of Hořany. It was built in 1896 on the site of an older bell tower. A painting of the Virgin Mary, dating from 1852 and painted by Wolfgang Siedl, is kept in the chapel. The lower part shows a view of Hořany in the mid-19th century. The painting was created 44 years before the chapel was built; its depiction of the village and the history of the building site offer two concrete reference points for placing it in time.
Another example of the village’s built heritage is House No. 11, dating from the 1930s. It is a rural corner house with a strong Cubist influence. Its design as an urban house type is unusual in the Czech countryside. The building is not accessible. The contrast between the rural corner house and urban house type makes its architectural classification distinctive; together with the chapel, it shows that Hořany encompasses different architectural forms and periods.
Historic routes and events
From the 16th to the 18th century, the long-distance Lipská road ran through Hořany, connecting Leipzig with Vienna. A cycling route also passes through the village. Check the route details before setting out so you can plan your ride around the current route.
Events in Hořany include a mixed volleyball tournament. Its 65th edition was announced for July 11, 2026.
