For planning your trip to Horčápsko, two perspectives are worth considering: the history of the village and its historic routes, and nearby cultural destinations in Březnice.

A chronological overview of local history

The history of Horčápsko dates back to before 1300. In the earliest Latin documents, the village was called “Hořečapsko.” A specific event followed in 1313, when King John of Luxembourg gave Horčápsko to the monastery in Ostrov. The village’s history can thus be understood through its early origins, a recorded name and a dated donation.

A mill in the surrounding area is also part of local history: it was first mentioned in writing in 1543. After being rebuilt, it resumed milling for the first time on October 26, 1868. The mill’s name is not the focus here; the dates offer a separate insight into the history of the area.

Historic routes and their traces

One branch of a historic route ran east along Horčápský Pond, over the eastern slope of the 538-meter-high Vinice mountain, and on to Březnice. Preserved sunken lanes around Vinice bear witness to a historic network of routes. A plague column stands beside the historic route to Březnice.

Another branch of the route led from Horčápsko through Hráze, a newer settlement that developed on a dam between two ponds. The development of the roads is also associated with specific dates: the road from Hrádek through Horčápsko to Tochovice was built in 1928. Construction of the road from Horčápsko to Hráze began in 1932; in 1934, a cherry-tree avenue was planted along it. Several sunken lanes along the historic route to Hráze have been preserved beside the present-day road.

A blue-marked hiking trail in Horčápsko also serves visitors and passes through important sights and interesting places in the surrounding area. If you include it in your plans, check the trail markings locally.

Cultural destinations and a walk in Březnice

Březnice Castle is about three kilometers from Horčápsko. It is a Renaissance castle converted from a Gothic fortress and has an English-style park. The original synagogue in Březnice was also built in the area around Horčápsko, from 1726 to 1728; it acquired its present appearance in 1874. Březnice thus brings together buildings with different histories.

A two-kilometer circular route through Březnice can be walked with a stroller. Route details may change; check them before your visit. Another link to the area is the pilgrimage route from Březnice to the pilgrimage site of Svatá Hora: its fourth station is in the cadastral area of Horčápsko, before Mount Višňovka.
