Hrimezdice brings together architectural history and the history of its quarry. Hřiměždice Castle, St. Anne’s Church and the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk each offer a different cultural and historical focus. The Hřiměždice Quarry, also known as Kujalův, lies on the northeastern edge of the village. Both historic diving activities and the annual Highjump event are part of the village’s history.

Castle, Church and Bridge Statue

Hřiměždice Castle is a simple, single-storey building in the style of Classicist Baroque and is first mentioned in 1788. St. Anne’s Church was built in 1797. It has a single nave, its presbytery has a three-sided exterior, and its tower has a bell-shaped roof. The two buildings therefore differ not only in their dates: the castle is described in terms of its form and style, while the church is also described in terms of its floor plan, presbytery and tower roof.

Some of the interior furnishings of St. Anne’s Church come from the former Pauline monastery in Obořiště. Thus, alongside its construction date and architecture, the origin of some of its furnishings is also part of the church’s cultural history.

A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands on a bridge over the stream that runs through the village, near the church. As a feature on the bridge, it adds a distinct landmark to the village’s church and castle history.

Quarry History and Highjump

Hřiměždice Quarry, also known as Kujalův, lies on the northeastern edge of Hrimezdice. Hrimezdice is close to the Slapy Reservoir. One specific historical event at the quarry was the first major diving course, held in 1959 under the direction of experienced instructors. The instructors had gained their experience in Germany. SVAZARM also established a training centre there for military and police divers. The course and training centre mark two different aspects of diving history: a single course and institutional training.

Highjump, an event featuring jumps into the water, has been held annually since 2000 around the turn of July and August. If you want to time your stay to coincide with Highjump, check the specific dates for the year in question. Since 2001, there has also been a large swing at the quarry on the former site of the helicopter. This means an annual event and another feature that has been in place since 2001 are both part of the site. If you are planning a visit to the quarry, check the latest access information in advance.

The castle’s first mention in 1788 and the church’s construction in 1797 predate the 1959 diving course; Highjump and the swing are later milestones, dating to 2000 and 2001. When looking for a hotel in Hrimezdice, you can therefore decide whether architectural and church history or the quarry and its events will play a greater role in your trip.
