Krásná Hora Nad Vltavou
Accommodation in Krásná Hora Nad Vltavou
Krásná Hora Nad Vltavou offers various ways to explore the town’s history and landscape, from buildings and memorials to cycling routes and the Viklan Vindiš erratic boulder. If you’re looking for a particular theme for your stay, you can choose from cultural history, historical connections and trails in the surrounding area.
Historical traces and buildings
The Kostel Svatého Mikuláše church was already standing in Krásná Hora Nad Vltavou before 1350. The clock tower of the Radnice town hall is a distinctive landmark of the square. Another striking feature is the Mariánský sloup: erected in 1772, this Baroque column is round in shape and topped with a gilded statue of the Virgin Mary.
At Kamenný korec, the vessel itself takes centre stage. The round, bowl-shaped measure rests on a square stone pedestal and has a small opening on the side. The pedestal is newer than the bowl and bears the year 1822.
The former Tvrz fortress also tells of its various uses: it was built in 1554, had a Baroque core and was later converted into a granary. It has been a protected monument since 1991. The monuments add further historical touches. Památník padlým stands between the church and the school and commemorates those who fell in the First World War. Památník letců commemorates three aviators who died in a crash. On 5 September 1929, a reconnaissance aircraft and a fighter plane collided during a military exercise near Přední Chlum.
Mining history and cultural connections
On 11 January 1351, Charles IV confirmed Krásná Hora’s privileges as a royal mining town. The gold mined there was used, together with gold from Knín and Jílové, to mint gold coins. The town’s history thus highlights both the privileges it was granted and the link between its gold and coin minting.
Other cultural connections involve people associated with Krásná Hora: the ancestors of the poet Karel Hynek Mácha lived here. Ema Destinová visited the “U dvou čápů” inn in Krásná Hora.
Cycling routes, landscape and erratic boulder
Three named cycling routes differ in their connections: Route 8138 links Krásná Hora with Radeč, Route 111 links Sedlčany with Krásná Hora nad Vltavou, and Route 301 links Buš with Krásná Hora nad Vltavou. For a general idea of each route, the stated starting point and destination are the key reference points. Route conditions may change; check the route before setting off.
The Viklan Vindiš erratic boulder lies one kilometre from the town, above the valley of the Pivoňka stream, south of the summit of Na Krámcích (449 m above sea level). The path there passes the Obecňák pond; from there, follow the yellow hiking trail markers along a forest path to the boulder. A sign at Viklan provides information about local history and native fauna and flora. This route combines details about the landscape, a marked trail and information about the surrounding area. Markings may change; check the current route before setting off.
The Lesní svět educational trail, also called Vletická naučná stezka, runs in the area around the settlement of Vletice near Krásná Hora Nad Vltavou. The Orlík Reservoir and the castles and castle ruins of Zvíkov and Vrškamýk are also in the wider Krásná Hora area. These destinations complement the local buildings and the erratic boulder with further themes related to the landscape and historical heritage.
