Obořiště combines a Baroque ensemble in the town centre with the history of a former fortress at the site of today’s Nový rybník pond. The Church of St. Joseph and the Pauline monastery complex are the cultural focal point. Brewery tours and a Western riding training centre nearby add further options. For a stay, it is worth distinguishing the town’s architectural history from activities that require prior arrangements.

Church of St. Joseph and Pauline Monastery

The Baroque Church of St. Joseph dates from 1712 and is attributed to Kryštof Dienzenhofer. Its floor plan consists of three interlocking ovals. The date of construction, attribution and floor plan give the church a specific architectural context beyond the general description of it as a Baroque building.

The Pauline monastery complex was built between 1681 and 1712. The church and complex stand at the centre of Obořiště, and the complex also shapes the north-western part of the town as an urban feature. The northern part of the former monastery garden is also relatively well preserved and free of more recent development. Thus, the ensemble includes not only the church building, but also the complex’s position in the town and its historic garden landscape.

Only the Church of St. Joseph is open to visitors in the former Pauline monastery. Check the current opening arrangements before travelling. This will help you plan your visit if you are interested in the church: the accessible part of the complex is clearly specified, while the other monastery areas are not part of the visitor programme.

The former fortress and Nový rybník pond

No structural remains of the former fortress in Obořiště have survived. It is believed to have stood where Nový rybník pond is today. Its history adds an earlier layer of time alongside the Baroque monastery complex: the fortress was first mentioned in historical records on 4 June 1425 in connection with a siege, and was subsequently burned down. Its location at today’s pond remains a probable identification; the mention at the time and its burning are part of the recorded historical sequence.

Comparing the two sites is helpful for getting your bearings in the town. The church and Pauline monastery represent its Baroque architectural history, while the former fortress, which no longer survives, is associated with today’s pond. Obořiště thus offers both an existing architectural ensemble and a history whose physical traces are no longer present.

Brewery and activities nearby

Nový Rybník Brewery was founded in 2013 with the aim of reviving the brewing tradition in the Dobříšsko region. It offers brewery tours with explanations and tastings, but by prior arrangement. If you plan a tour, arrange your visit in advance rather than assuming it will be available as a spontaneous activity.

The Stone Ranch, s.r.o. training centre for Western riding disciplines is also located near Obořiště. Check the current arrangements before booking. Its connection to Obořiště is that it is nearby: the training centre is a separate destination alongside the town’s sights.

If you are considering Obořiště for a hotel stay, you can choose your reason for travelling based on its different highlights: architectural history in the town, a brewery tour by appointment, or Western riding nearby. These options require different kinds of planning, so it makes sense to consider them separately when deciding on a stay.
