Opočnice – Church, Memorial Sites and Vinný vrch
Accommodation in Opočnice
Opočnice offers two distinct perspectives for planning a trip: sacred architecture and historic memorial sites in the village, and natural history at Vinný vrch. These themes are easy to distinguish when considering whether your interest lies more in architectural forms and memorials, or in protected areas and biodiversity.
Church and sacred art
The Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius is defined by two specific features. Its tower is 46 metres high and has a square ground plan. While its height gives a measure of the building’s structure, the ground plan describes the shape of its base; these are two different aspects of the architecture. Inside the church, 14 images of the Stations of the Cross can still be seen. The Stations of the Cross depict Christ’s Passion in a series of images; the 14 images therefore form a religious cycle. A striking architectural feature and sacred art thus offer two distinct points of interest. If you are interested in churches, you can pay attention both to the exterior form and to the iconographic programme.
Memorial sites and local history
The memorials in Opočnice have different, partly overlapping dedications. A plaque commemorating the victims of the First World War and the legionnaires is affixed to the municipal office building. In a park at a crossroads 100 metres south of the municipal office stands a monument to the victims of the First and Second World Wars. Both therefore commemorate the First World War; the monument also includes the Second World War, while the legionnaires are explicitly named on the plaque. A statue of the Holy Trinity also stands in Opočnice’s municipal park; it was consecrated on 29 October 1854. The statue is thus tied to a precise consecration date, while the plaque and the monument differ in the groups they commemorate. To understand the local memorials, it helps to consider their dedications, locations and dates separately.
Amateur theatre as a cultural facet
The history of amateur theatre offers another cultural facet: in 2013, Opočnické divadélko decided to celebrate the 115th anniversary of the first recorded mention of amateur theatre in Opočnice. This adds a connection to the village’s theatre history to its architectural and religious heritage.
Vinný vrch: natural monument and biodiversity
Vinný vrch lies about 0.5 km west of Opočnice, within the village’s cadastral area. The natural monument was designated in 1973 to protect an abundant occurrence of bělozářka liliovitá. In addition to this botanical reason for protection, Vinný vrch is home to a very large population of common lizards, as well as invertebrates, particularly molluscs and insects. Xerothermic grassland is also among its natural features. The technical term xerothermic refers to warm, dry conditions and here describes the vegetation type. The reason for protection, wildlife and grassland are different aspects of the same natural monument. Unlike the church and memorials, the emphasis here is not on a single building or historic date, but on botanical and zoological features.
