When planning a trip to Týnčany, the karst landscape, several trails with different routes and the preserved buildings in the village offer concrete points of interest. When choosing a route, it is worth distinguishing between the similarly named Petrovická and Petrovicko nature trails: they differ in their routes and areas of focus.

Karst landscape and caves

The Týnčanský Karst is an incompletely developed karst area featuring plateaus, canyons and ravines, karren, sinkholes and caves. As of January 1, 2026, 19 caves, more than 15 karst springs and spring outlets, as well as numerous above-ground karst features, had been recorded there. A distinctive feature of the local karst area is a tufa site at springs that emerge from the Týnčany limestone. The landscape therefore includes both underground formations and springs and features at the surface.

No cave in the Týnčanský Karst is open to the public. However, on various occasions, the Týnčany Speleological Club enables visits to some caves. The irregularly held Open Caves Day usually includes a more detailed tour of Divišova Cave and a surface excursion through the Týnčanský Karst. A speleological base is located next to the cave. For those interested in speleology, the club also provides information about opportunities to take part in work parties in the caves. If you are planning a visit, check the club’s schedule in advance: these opportunities do not mean that the caves are open to the public at all times.

Compare nature trails and routes

The 27-kilometre Petrovická nature trail runs from Petrovice via Týnčany and Divišova Cave and back to Petrovice. It is rated easy to moderate. Allow a full day for this trail or split it into sections. The return to Petrovice and the recommended day-long itinerary are useful points of comparison when considering this route alongside other options.

By contrast, the similarly named Petrovicko nature trail runs from Petrovice to Týnčany-Melena. Its 20 information boards cover botany, zoology, karst, geology and folk architecture. This gives it a different focus from the Petrovická: the topics presented on the boards are as much a part of the route description as its starting point and destination. Another option is the approximately 30-kilometre Petrovice–Prčice route, which passes through Týnčany. It starts at the SK Petrovice sports ground and ends in Prčice. Unlike the Petrovická, which returns to Petrovice, this route ends in Prčice.

Events throughout the year

Several recurring events provide additional points of reference when planning a trip. The Pochod krajem kamenů walk takes place every year on the second weekend in September; one of its checkpoints is at Divišova Cave. The Pochod do Prčic walk is held annually in May, and its extended route passes close to the cave. This makes it possible to distinguish between a May event and the September weekend without conflating their respective routes.

A one-day multi-genre festival is held every year at Chalupa Helena on the third weekend in June. It runs overnight from Saturday to Sunday; the exact date is announced separately. Check the announced dates before your trip, especially if you want to coordinate your stay with one of these events.

Preserved buildings in Týnčany

Local history is another aspect of a trip here. Týnčany has a preserved two-storey log-built chamber in house No. 25 and a square chapel on the village green dating from 1762. The two buildings represent different aspects of the architectural heritage: the log-built chamber is part of a house, while the chapel is a separate building on the village green. Together with the topics of folk architecture and geology covered by the Petrovicko nature trail, they offer another perspective on Týnčany, beyond its trails and karst landscape.
