Počaply – Landscape and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Počaply
Počaply lies in a small valley southeast of Březnice. The Mlýnský potok flows through the village; Počapelský rybník is a named body of water with an area of 10.9 ha, and the hill Šance rises to the north. The village’s history includes a church of medieval origin, the fortified site Hradiště Šance (Bozeň), and other historical features. When looking for a hotel for a trip to Počaply, it is therefore helpful to consider whether you would like to focus on the landscape, architecture or local history.
Landscape and Location
The Mlýnský potok runs through Počaply and provides a landmark in the village. Počapelský rybník is a separate body of water, covering 10.9 ha. The stream and the pond thus offer different points of reference: one flows through the village, while the other is described by its area. To the north of Počaply, the elongated hill Šance rises to 514 m above sea level. The stream, pond and hill help you distinguish the water features from the topography. Another distinctive feature of the area is the protected zone of the Březnice–Oblouček natural monument, which includes land within the cadastral area of Počaply u Březnice.
Hradiště Šance (Bozeň)
Distinct from the hill Šance is Hradiště Šance (Bozeň), a two-part fortified site on a wooded spur about 1 km north of Počaply. It covers approximately 1.6 ha. The approximate distance indicates its location relative to the village, while the area describes the size of the site. Hradiště Bozeň can be reached from Myslín or Dobrá Voda u Březnice via a blue-marked hiking trail. The location and route information complement each other when planning a visit: one pinpoints the site, while the other names the trail’s starting points. This makes it possible to consider the Hradiště as a destination in its own right, with archaeological and landscape significance.
Church and Local History
The Church of Saint John the Baptist in Počaply dates from the mid-13th century and retains its original spatial layout. The date indicates its age, while the preserved spatial layout describes the arrangement of the church interior. The church complex also includes an open chapel at the southeastern corner of the cemetery.
The first written record of Počaply dates to 1380; Jodocus de Poczapl is named in it. Another historical detail concerns the bell of Saint Mark: Jan Josef z Újezda donated it to the municipality of Počaply in 1702. Several restored crosses from the mid-19th century are located within the cadastral area of Počaply. The dates thus range from the church, built in the mid-13th century, through the first written record and the bell donation to the 19th-century crosses.
