Dlouhá Lhota offers two distinctly different highlights for a trip: church and castle history, and flight experiences at the airport. The Church of St John the Evangelist offers a glimpse into medieval architecture and art; the castle and park showcase later changes to the estate. At the airport, sightseeing flights and a flight option that lets participants take the controls are the main attractions. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first decide whether cultural history or aviation should shape your trip.

Church of St John: Founding, Altar and Bell

The Church of St John the Evangelist was founded in the 14th century. Its original architectural style was Gothic, and parts of the original masonry have survived, particularly in the presbytery. Inside is a carved folding altarpiece from the 14th century: the Virgin Mary stands in the centre, with St John depicted on the sides. The arrangement contrasts the central figure with the side panels, making the altarpiece an interesting work of art in its own right. The church tower also houses a bell dating from 1493. While the masonry and altarpiece illustrate the church’s founding period, the bell provides a later, precisely dated point of reference.

Castle: Building Phases and Access

The castle’s history also comprises clearly distinct building phases. A fortress previously stood on the site of the present-day castle, but it was burned down during the Thirty Years’ War; a castle was built on the site in the 17th century. Renovations in the late 18th century gave it its present-day Neoclassical character. The 17th century marks the construction of the castle, while the late 18th century marks its transformation into its current Neoclassical style. In visitor information updated in 2019, the municipality listed the castle as privately owned and not open to the public. Check the municipality’s current visitor information before planning a visit to the castle.

Castle Park: Changing Gardens and Distinctive Features

The castle park also shows how the grounds’ design has changed: an English park now occupies the site of a French garden laid out in the 18th century. The park includes paths, historic benches, pavilions and swings. In the upper part stands a faithful copy of a Neolithic pagan place of worship. This replica adds a distinctive feature alongside the change from a French to an English garden. The castle sanctuary invites visitors to use it as a peaceful, contemplative place.
