Sadská: Urban History, Jezero and Kersko–Bory Nature Park

Culture and History

In Sadská, the Church of St Apolinář leads directly into the town's architectural history: its present form was created through a Baroque-Gothic reconstruction in 1737–1739; it was originally Gothic. The Baroque bell tower Zvonice u náměstí was built in 1691 as the original clock tower. The Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows was originally built between 1714 and 1721 at a healing spring; today it has a Baroque appearance and is listed as a cultural monument.

The O. G. Paroubek Monument also connects art and local history. Created by Jan Štursa in 1910, the tomb is classified as a Secession-style work and is listed as a cultural monument. At the Městské muzeum Sadská, an exhibition prepared by the Polabské muzeum in Poděbrady presents the history of the town. Its chronological scope extends from archaeological excavations to the present day.

A different historical perspective is offered by the Hasičská expozice in Sadská. It commemorates the deeds of Czech firefighters who gave their lives for the freedom of the people and the preservation of the idea „Bližnímu ku po moci“. The cultural events calendar also includes the Klicperovy divadelní dny: the festival was revived in 1999 and has held the status of a regional theatre showcase since 2005.

Landscape and Water

Skála lies in the western part of the Sadská witness hill and is registered as a significant landscape feature with ecological, landscape and geomorphological importance. At the same time, Skála is a significant fossil site from the Middle Turonian, with a very rich occurrence of fossilised marine animals.

Jezero was created by sand extraction, which began in 1972 and ended in 1992. Today, the body of water lies amid pine forests and offers clean water and swimming opportunities. The so-called Old Elbe, a former branch of the Elbe, is located immediately beside Jezero. This significant landscape feature is registered and protected; it includes wetland communities as well as rare protected animal and plant species.

In the wider regional surroundings of Sadská lie the Kersko–Bory forests. They have been protected as the Přírodní park Kersko–Bory Nature Park since 2010.

Paths and Connections

The „Po stopách našich předků“ educational trail passes through Sadská and begins at Palacký Square. Its 20 stone markers stand at historic or natural points. The trail forms a loop that can be walked or cycled; a map is available.

Sadská has good bus and rail connections to Prague, Nymburk and Kolín.
