Vrbová Lhota brings together several historical layers: the town’s cultural monuments include the Chapel of St. Wenceslas and an Art Nouveau school building. Archaeological evidence relates in part to the Vrbová Lhota site, and in part to a larger area or its surroundings. Added to these are written references to the town, a historical landscape description and two cycling routes listed in a regional strategy from 2021. When planning your trip, it is worth considering these different time and geographical contexts separately.

Cultural monuments of the town

The Chapel of St. Wenceslas, a cultural monument in Vrbová Lhota, dates from the 19th century. The Art Nouveau school building is also one of the town’s cultural monuments. The two buildings offer different historical points of reference: the chapel’s construction period is known, while the school building is identified by its architectural style. If you want to explore the town’s cultural heritage, these two monuments provide a concrete starting point for discovering its built heritage.

Archaeological traces and their geographical context

Archaeological traces add much earlier periods to these built heritage sites. Work in the area between Radim, Pečky, Vrbová Lhota, Sokolče and as far as Poděbrady unearthed stone tools indicating settlement at least since the Neolithic. Three gold coin issues are represented at the Vrbová Lhota site; their occurrence has no known parallel in Central Bohemia to date. The site is also distinguished by an unusually high proportion of metal-casting activity. Thus, the regional comparison of the gold coin issues and the unusually high proportion of metal-casting activity are two distinct features. Individual finds from the Roman period and from a later Slavic settlement are attributed to the surroundings of Vrbová Lhota. The scale matters when interpreting the evidence: the stone tools relate to the larger area, the gold coin issues and metal-casting activity to the site, and other finds to the surroundings.

Written evidence and the historical landscape

Written evidence complements the archaeological traces. A written mention of Vrbová Lhota is documented for 1535. As early as 1502, beer from Poděbrady was to be delivered to the Lhota then known as Wrbová. The two records point to different historical contexts: a written mention of the town and planned trade in goods. The historic Březenský pond was fed by water from the Výrovka River. Extensive gravel-sand and windblown-sand deposits lie north and northwest of Vrbová Lhota; to the east, south and partly west are heavy soils that in many places correspond to marsh-like conditions.
