Vševily: Landscape and Culture in the Brdy
Accommodation in Vševily
Vševily lies on the southern edge of the Brdy Mountains. Here, the landscape, culture and local wine-growing history all come together when choosing a place to stay. Vistas and sightlines give walks a strong connection to the landscape, while the deep Brdy forests offer opportunities for cycling. The Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk and GALERIE 10 add different cultural themes. You can choose what to focus on depending on whether you would like to spend your time exploring the landscape, enjoying art or learning about local history.
Landscape, walks and cycling
The landscape around Vševily offers vistas and sightlines that invite you to go for walks and explore the surroundings. The deep Brdy forests offer opportunities for cycling. When choosing a nature-focused activity, it helps to distinguish between them: walks focus on vistas and exploring the surroundings, while cycling takes you through the forest landscape. This lets you choose an activity based on the aspect of the landscape that interests you most during your stay.
The chapel and GALERIE 10
A notable historic landmark is the Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk, with an iron cross on a stone pedestal. It is listed as a protected immovable cultural monument under registration number ÚSKP 14358/2-2600. The chapel offers a clearly defined theme if you are interested in cultural heritage. GALERIE 10 offers a different perspective: it is an exhibition space for artworks in Vševily. It is located in the stairwell leading to the municipal library, and its exhibitions generally change three to four times a year. Unlike the chapel’s enduring connection to the past, the gallery’s artistic content changes with each exhibition. If you plan to visit GALERIE 10, check in advance which exhibition is currently on display. This will let you plan your visit around the specific presentation.
Wine-growing history
The history of wine-growing can also be traced through specific milestones. In 1995, Chateau Aureus Vševily began gathering information about suitable grape varieties for the unusual elevation of 594 metres in the southern Brdy Mountains. Chateau Aureus Vševily bottled its first wine in 2002. The dates mark different steps: 1995 saw the start of research into grape varieties, while 2002 marked the first bottling. The small, sunny vineyard lies behind the municipal office. Its elevation explains the focus on grape varieties, while its location gives the wine-growing history a specific connection to the place.
Diving in a private quarry
Another activity, with a different focus, takes place at the private Vševily quarry. From 2016, it was made accessible for introductory dives and courses through the diving club and school Lucky Diving; access was arranged through the Lucky-Diving club. This club-organised activity differs from general exploration of the landscape. If diving is important to your trip, check directly with the diving club in advance to see whether an introductory dive or course is currently available. This will let you include the activity in your plans for your stay.
