Heřmánkovice: All Saints Church and routes in Janovičky
Accommodation in Heřmánkovice
All Saints Church shapes Heřmánkovice’s cultural and historical profile. Janovičky is the named point of reference for skiing and hiking, while the Vyhlídkový přejezd Javořích hor cycling route passes through both villages. This brings together architectural and art history on the one hand, and seasonal or route-based activities on the other. For your trip planning, it is worth considering these highlights separately: access to the church may vary during restoration work, and winter sports are seasonal.
All Saints Church: building history and architecture
The present-day All Saints Church (Kostel Všech svatých) was built from 1722 to 1726 on the site of a wooden church dating from the 14th century. It is an important Baroque building in the Broumovsko region and a landmark of Heřmánkovice and the surrounding landscape. The church and its grounds are a national cultural monument.
As an example of High Baroque and Empire style, the building features a striking combination of floor plan and architectural elements: the floor plan is elongated and octagonal, and the tower is prismatic with rounded corners. There is also a narrow presbytery and a sacristy. These specific features provide a clear basis for understanding the church’s architecture.
The ceiling paintings are another of the church’s defining works of art. They were created in 1736 by Johann Hausdorf, a painter from Broumov. The iconography depicts a view of heaven, as well as the four Evangelists and angels in elliptical wreaths. This connects the study of the church building with a clearly dated example of religious painting.
There is also a Calvary group dating from around 1800 in front of the church. Two reconciliation crosses stand by a cemetery wall. Together, these distinct historic features invite visitors to look beyond the church building and notice other historical markers in the village.
Janovičky: ski area and sports complex
The Janovičky ski area offers more than one kilometre of artificially snow-covered ski slopes, groomed daily. Seasonal facilities include ski equipment rental, a ski school, a buffet, toilets and free parking. Check before travelling to see whether the winter season is underway.
Koupálo Janovičky is a sports complex between Heřmánkovice and Janovičky, on the site of a former swimming pool. Ask locally about the specific activities available at the sports complex. Annual sled dog races are also held in Janovičky; dates vary. If you would like to plan your visit around a race, check the event date in advance.
Hiking and cycling
A blue-marked hiking trail runs through Janovičky, along the ridge of the Javoří hory mountains, to the Janovičky–Gluszyca tourist border crossing. When crossing the border, applicable conditions may depend on current regulations. The Vyhlídkový přejezd Javořích hor cycling route passes through Janovičky and Heřmánkovice; surface and access conditions may change.
The routes differ in their specifically named features: the hiking trail is described by its blue markings, the ridge and the border crossing as its destination. The cycling route is defined by its passage through both villages. This can help you choose the type of outing that suits you without treating the routes as the same. Check current conditions at the border crossing and on the cycling route before setting out.
Church visits
The church visits planned for August 2026 as part of the Open Churches programme were cancelled because the start of reconstruction work was announced for 1 August 2026. Access may vary during restoration. If visiting the church is part of your trip plans, check the latest information on visiting opportunities in advance.
