Hlavňov: Hiking Trails, Architectural History and Cycling Tours
Accommodation in Hlavňov
Hlavňov lies directly below the Broumovské stěny and is considered an important starting point for trips in the Broumovsko region. For hikers, the marked trails to Hvězda provide a specific point of reference; the Vyhlídková cesta cycling route also passes through the village. The Chapel of Panny Marie Sněžné, Chata Hvězda and the literary connection in Žitavec add cultural and historical interest.
Hiking Trails and Protected Area
The red or blue marked trails to Hvězda can start in Hlavňov; the elevation gain is approximately 300 metres. The Broumovské stěny lie directly above the village and have been a National Nature Reserve since 1956. This connects the area’s natural and hiking features, from a specific route to the site’s protected status. The approximate 300-metre elevation gain is a useful first reference when planning your day around the route to Hvězda.
Buildings and Literary History
On Hvězda, the Chapel of Panny Marie Sněžné was designed by Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer in 1732–1733. Chata Hvězda was built in 1855 and served as an inn and a forester’s lodging. For Chata Hvězda, the relevant details are its year of construction and former use; for the chapel, they are its design and architect. The chapel’s design dates are more than a century earlier than the construction of Chata Hvězda, making it easy to distinguish the two histories chronologically.
A dwelling once stood at Žitavec, where Jiří–Vostrý Žitavec lived until 1729; he is known from Jirásek’s novel Temno. His time living there ended just a few years before the chapel was designed in 1732–1733; the construction of Chata Hvězda in 1855 belongs to a much later period. The historical perspective thus ranges from a biographical and literary connection to two distinct building histories.
Visitor Facilities On Site
Construction of a visitor shelter with a toilet began in June 2026 at the Hvězda car park for visitors to the Broumovské stěny, particularly the Hvězda area. The plots concerned are in the cadastral area of Hlavňov.
Hospůdka Na hrázi is located on a tourist route to the Broumovské skály, between two ponds. It has a sunny terrace overlooking the pond. If you are planning a visit, check its current opening status in advance.
A Cycling Route as a Second Point of Reference
The Vyhlídková cesta cycling tour follows red-marked cycle route No. 4000 from Police nad Metují through Suchý Důl and Hlavňov to Honské sedlo (Pasa). Hlavňov is therefore a pass-through point on this route; on the red or blue trails to Hvězda, by contrast, the village can serve as a starting point. Different reference points are available for planning: for the hiking trails, the approximate 300-metre elevation gain; for the cycling tour, the route number, the sequence of places and the endpoint.
