Libchyně lies northeast of Nové Město nad Metují in a valley on the Libchyňský potok, about four kilometers upstream from the town. The direction and the course of the stream provide two different points of reference for its location. The valley, hiking trails and local history shape the themes of a stay. The Geostezka Libchyňské údolí follows the green hiking trail through the valley to Libchyně. The “Sendraž – rozhledna Na Vartě” hiking trail also leads to Libchyně and through the valley of the Libchyňský potok.

The Valley and Its Geological Setting

The Libchyňský potok cuts into the bedrock along its entire course. This consists of Upper Cretaceous sediments, particularly marlstone, as well as underlying metamorphic phyllites. The sequence can be distinguished: marlstone belongs to the Upper Cretaceous sediments, while phyllites lie beneath it and are metamorphic. The valley of the Libchyňský potok offers a walk through almost wild nature. For those interested in the landscape and geology, there are two perspectives to consider: a walk through the valley and the structure of the bedrock into which the stream cuts.

Hiking Trails in the Libchyňské Valley

The Geostezka Libchyňské údolí follows the green hiking trail through the Libchyňské Valley to Libchyně. The section from the “nad koupalištěm” turnoff to Libchyně is 3.3 kilometers long. This distance applies to the specified section and provides a concrete reference point for planning your stages. The Geostezka terrain is not suitable for strollers. Check local trail conditions before setting out. The “Sendraž – rozhledna Na Vartě” hiking trail also leads to Libchyně, runs through the valley of the Libchyňský potok and crosses five footbridges. The two trail descriptions emphasize different features: the Geostezka has a specified section length, while the route through the valley and its five footbridge crossings are the key points of reference for the “Sendraž – rozhledna Na Vartě” hiking trail. When choosing between these descriptions, consider whether a specific distance or a description of the route would be more helpful for your planning.

Historical Milestones

The first written mention of Libchyně dates from 1459. In 1503, Jan Černčický of Kácov handed the village over to the newly founded Nové Město Hradiště; Libchyně remained under its authority until 1848. The years mark different events: 1459 is the first written mention, and 1503 the handover. Another local story concerns the mill. Jan Štěpán built a mill in Libchyně in 1557, which was bought by Jan Libchyňský in 1636. The dates 1557 and 1636 distinguish its construction from its later purchase, adding a local mill story to the political timeline.
