Martinkovice is a destination for visitors interested in sacred architectural history and a protected landscape. The entire area lies within the Broumovsko Protected Landscape Area. The village’s cultural attractions include the Church of St. George and St. Martin, St. Anna Chapel, and a Stations of the Cross near the chapel. These places offer different perspectives: on historical building phases, sacred furnishings, and the landscape around Martinkovice.

Landscape and Geology

The entire area of Martinkovice is part of the Broumovsko Protected Landscape Area. One geological detail can be seen at Hoprich: Permian reddish-brown clay slate occurs there, turning grey in places. The area’s broad protected status and this specific reference to local rock are distinct aspects of its natural character.

Church and Rectory

The Church of St. George and St. Martin is a significant rural early Baroque church building from the late 17th century in Bohemia. The present church was built from 1692 to 1698 to a design by Martin Allio. It retains a masonry tower that had already been added in 1650. This distinguishes the tower’s earlier addition from the later construction phase of the present church.

The Church of Our Lady, St. George and St. Martin, together with its rectory, is listed as a protected cultural monument under number 36001/6-1802. The Baroque rectory next to the church comprises the rectory building and three outbuildings. The present rectory building was also constructed between 1692 and 1698. The church and rectory therefore share a construction phase, while the surviving tower dates from an earlier period; the rectory complex adds the outbuildings to this picture.

St. Anna Chapel and Stations of the Cross

At the other end of Martinkovice, St. Anna Chapel stands at the foot of the Broumovské stěny. It dates from 1798. Inside are a painting of the Coronation of the Virgin Mary and a Rococo altar of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. The painting and altar have different thematic emphases: the painting depicts the Coronation of Mary, while the altar is dedicated to the Fourteen Holy Helpers.

Nearby, the second Stations of the Cross has all fourteen of its stone stations intact. The site’s cultural history is reflected both in the chapel’s interior furnishings and in the complete sequence of surviving Stations of the Cross. These are distinct aspects of sacred architecture and art.
