Ubislavice: Churches, Sculptures and History
Accommodation in Ubislavice
These include the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, preserved log houses, statues and crosses, the U Jána memorial site, and the “Spolu” sculpture group. The topics range from medieval architectural history to a work created in 2015. This offers different perspectives on the place: architecture, local history and art each provide a distinct focus.
Church and Mill History
The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Úbislavice is an immovable cultural monument. It was originally a Gothic church dating from the 14th century; it was later remodeled in the Baroque style. If you are interested in architectural history, it is worth distinguishing between the original structure and its later form: the Gothic classification refers to the early building, while the Baroque remodeling marks a subsequent change. Both details belong to the history of the same church, but describe different periods.
The local history also includes the block mill No. 56 near the church. Grain was milled there from the beginning of the 15th century until 1920. This brings into view not only the history of a religious building, but also the use of a mill site for processing grain. The long time span makes the mill’s history a distinct historical perspective; the church’s architectural development, meanwhile, can be traced through its Gothic origins and later remodeling.
Architectural Styles, Memorial Site and Art
Several log houses, as well as numerous statues and crosses, have been preserved in Úbislavice. These features broaden the view beyond the church: log houses represent a different form of architecture, while statues and crosses make their own cultural contributions. If you want to choose among different topics, you can consider traditional buildings, religious and artistic features, and the history of the church separately.
The U Jána memorial site, restored in June 2024, comprises a newly forged cross, a bench and an information board. With its restoration in 2024, local history reaches into the recent past; the memorial site is therefore a more recent point of reference alongside the older histories of the church and mill.
The “Spolu” sculpture group stands along the path from the church in Úbislavice to Zboží. It was created in 2015 by students from VŠUP and AVU in Prague. Compared with the church, with its Gothic origins and later Baroque remodeling, “Spolu” is a significantly more recent artistic landmark. If you would like to compare architectural history with a work created later, this contrast in age offers a concrete guide for choosing a theme.
Landscape and Historical Traces
Since October 2005, Úbislavice has been part of the Český ráj European Geopark, under the auspices of UNESCO. This designation complements the architectural and artistic themes with a landscape perspective and provides an independent point of reference for exploring the place.
Archaeological traces are also part of the local history. In 1939, three pits containing medieval pottery were reported near houses No. 29 and 31. Their function has been interpreted in different ways: they may have been a pottery kiln with ancillary structures, or a furnace used for ironworking. These two possibilities show that a specific reported find does not automatically lead to a definitive interpretation of its function. For those interested in archaeology, the distinction between the find itself and its possible interpretation is an important part of understanding it.
