Unterneugrün is a good choice for travellers who want to consider cycling, local history and local leisure activities when choosing where to stay. The village lies on the Lomnický potok in the mountainous region of north-west Bohemia. This description of its landscape sits alongside two other perspectives on the village: its cycling routes and historic memorials. If you are looking for a hotel, these different themes can help you decide what matters most to you before your trip.

Cycling around Unterneugrün

Regional cycling route 2044 between Sokolov and Carlsfeld passes through Dolní Nivy. The route is 36 kilometres long and rated difficult. It runs mainly along third-class and local roads and is suitable for trekking and cross bikes. For planning your ride, these are separate criteria: the length describes the extent of the route, the rating indicates its stated level of difficulty, and the road details describe its course. Together, they give you a specific route profile to help you decide whether it fits your travel plans.

A second route reference is cycling route 2043 between Kraslice and Dolní Nivy, which is shown on the Euregio Egrensis cycling map. The two numbers refer to different route details: for route 2044, the length, difficulty rating and predominant road type are specified; route 2043 is identified by its two locations and its map entry. This lets you distinguish between the routes when planning, without combining the details into a single route.

History and memorials

The earliest surviving written historical reference to Dolní Nivy dates from 1353. This date provides an early written point of reference for the village’s history. Another kind of memorial is the monument to the victims of the First World War in the Dolní Nivy district. It stands about 50 metres from the municipal office and is a tall natural-stone monument with a stone cross at the top. A commemorative plaque bearing a German inscription and the names of fallen residents is set into the monument. The inscription links remembrance of the war dead with the names of people from the village.

According to local tradition, a manor house once stood where houses number 1 and 2 are now. The house numbers give this local tradition a specific location. Alongside the written reference from 1353, there is therefore a tradition about an earlier manor; both point to different ways in which the past remains present in the village’s history.

Finkův mlýn also has a history of use. The mill served as a sawmill for processing logs; the building also once housed an inn. The mill has ceased operating, and the inn is also part of the building’s history. Thus, the same place is associated with both wood processing and its former use as an inn.

Local leisure activities

The multi-purpose sports court in Dolní Nivy is suitable for tennis, volleyball, nohejbal, handball, football, basketball and other ball games. Its wide range of activities makes the court a leisure attraction in its own right, alongside the cycling routes and historical sites. Depending on what interests you during your stay, you can consider different aspects of Unterneugrün: the mountainous landscape along the Lomnický potok, the routes through or to Dolní Nivy, the memorials and the sports facilities.
