Rychvald can be explored through different highlights: its Renaissance castle, the Late Gothic forms of St. Anne’s Church, and the Skučák protected area. The castle and church offer two distinct perspectives on architecture; Skučák adds wetlands and wildlife to the mix.

Rychvald Castle: Renaissance Architecture and Visits

Rychvald Castle is a two-storey Renaissance building with four wings, commissioned by Bernard Barský z Baště and built between 1575 and 1577. It is protected as a cultural monument, and historic architectural features have been preserved. The visit includes the courtyard with historic arcades, vaulted cellars and a chapel, as well as two kitchens: a black kitchen and a white kitchen. The rooms visitors see include gentlemen’s and ladies’ salons, a gallery, a children’s room, a bedroom and the main dining hall. The visit therefore covers both architectural features and a range of distinct interior spaces.

Individual visits to Rychvald Castle are currently available for groups of four or more by prior arrangement. Confirm availability before your visit. If the castle’s interiors and history are important to your trip, take this requirement into account when planning.

St. Anne’s Church and Late Gothic Forms

St. Anne’s Church is a valuable religious building that documents the persistence of Late Gothic forms in regional architecture through the end of the 16th century. It is a single-nave building with a polygonal chancel and a projecting square tower. “Single-nave” describes a building with one main nave; the polygonal chancel describes the chancel’s many-sided shape. The church has been protected as a cultural monument since May 3, 1958.

The castle and church represent different architectural emphases: the castle was built as a Renaissance structure between 1575 and 1577, while St. Anne’s Church represents the persistence of Late Gothic forms through the end of the 16th century. Those interested in architectural history can compare two aspects of the same period without treating Renaissance and Late Gothic as equivalent.

Skučák: Pond Ecosystem and Birdlife

The Skučák Nature Reserve protects a pond ecosystem and adjacent wetland habitats where significant plant and animal species occur. Several pairs of great crested grebes (Podiceps cristatus) and various duck species can be observed at Skučák. These include Eurasian teal (Anas crecca), garganey (Anas querquedula) and northern shoveler (Anas clypeata). If you are interested in birdwatching, these species offer a specific focus for observation; their presence may vary by season.
