St. Giles Church: History in Several Building Phases
St. Giles Church is the oldest historic building in Újezd U Přelouče. A church dedicated to St. Giles already stood there before 1384. The Baroque church was built in 1703 on medieval foundations and remodeled again at the end of the 18th century. Its history therefore encompasses several distinct periods: an early church tradition, the construction of the Baroque building and a later alteration.
The year 1703 therefore does not mark the beginning of the church’s history at this site, but a later building phase. If you are interested in the development of historic buildings, you can view the medieval foundations and the Baroque building as distinct layers of local history.
Bell Tower and Organ
A small Baroque wooden bell tower stands north of the church. It has a rectangular ground plan and a pyramidal shingle roof. Its material, ground plan and roof shape are three specific features that describe the tower. Its position north of the church also provides a simple point of orientation within this historic ensemble.
The history of the bells also offers a clear comparison over time: in 1576, the tower had two bells; today, only one remains. The church also houses an organ built by Josef Ignác Welzel in 1855. The years 1576 and 1855 thus represent different aspects of local history: changes in the number of bells and the construction of a musical instrument.
