Hoslovice combines a cultural focus with other themes for your stay: the Vodní mlýn Hoslovice water mill site is dedicated to rural life, while an observation tower near Hoslovice offers views of the landscape. St. Wenceslas Chapel and the St. Wenceslas fair are also local points of interest. Depending on your interests, you can focus on historic work and living spaces, regional food and customs, or the views.

Water Mill, Exhibition and Crafts

The Vodní mlýn Hoslovice water mill site consists of a mill with living quarters, stables with a shed, and a barn. In June 2008, the complex was declared a national cultural monument. Visitors can see preserved, functioning milling equipment, a pantry, a log room, and a living room with a stove and tiled stove. Various farming tools are also on display. The visit therefore goes beyond mill technology to include living spaces, food storage, and agricultural work.

The permanent exhibition “Ze života šumavského Podlesí” explores rural life, agricultural work, the cultivation and processing of crops, and livestock farming. Other topics include traditional regional food, food storage and preparation, and customs throughout the year. Together, these themes offer a look at several aspects of everyday life: from growing crops and handling food to recurring customs. If you are interested in the connection between agriculture and food culture, this exhibition makes a fitting focus for your visit to the mill site.

Regular events include children’s programs, putting the mill wheel into operation, and demonstrations of traditional crafts. Events also feature tastings of traditional foods and freshly baked bread. These activities complement the exhibition with demonstrations and samples. If you want to attend a particular demonstration or tasting, check the event dates in advance.

Views and Local Tradition

A telecommunications tower with an observation platform was built near Hoslovice in 2005. From the platform, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Šumava peaks, the Horažďovicko area, and the Strakonicko area. This viewpoint is quite different from the mill’s thematic focus: here, the emphasis is on views of the landscapes mentioned, while the mill focuses on buildings, working life, and regional everyday culture. These two themes offer different options when deciding what to focus on during your stay.

St. Wenceslas Chapel in Hoslovice is a protected late Baroque chapel dating from the second half of the 18th century. Hoslovice also celebrates the St. Wenceslas fair. Alongside the mill site, a historic chapel and a local festive tradition are therefore among the cultural attractions of the town.
